Feeling guilty about getting extra time during exams

For context I am 21 and I am currently on an Access to HE course before I hopefully go to uni this September. I received an ADHD diagnosis last year, meaning I this is the first time I have received extra time during an exam. I have always struggled academically, did not perform as well as I hoped to during GCSEs and only got PPP on my Level 3 BTEC.

At my Access course, so far I have only gotten Distinctions on my assignments. Recently I had an open book exam. Exams have always been my weak point, but since this was open book the main problem for me was less to do with memorising the right content but rather organising my time properly (which is something I have also struggled with). Since I have ADHD, I was able to receive 25% extra time, which I ended up using.

However, I can't help but to feel guilty.. and even a bit embarrassed. I didn't think much of it until the exam ended for most other people in the class who didn't receive extra time. Once they got up and walked out the room, I felt kinda stupid that they managed to complete the exam without extra time.

you don’t need to be embarrassed. The extra time isn’t a “bonus” it’s an adjustment that levels the playing field so your ADHD doesn’t unfairly hold you back. Exams have always been your weak point, and using the time you’re entitled to is actually the smart, responsible thing to do. The fact that you’ve been getting Distinctions on your assignments shows you’re capable and hardworking extra time doesn’t change that, it just helps your performance reflect your true ability. Everyone has different needs and strengths finishing at a different pace doesn’t make you any less competent or deserving.

I wouldnt feel embarrassed.
You are perfectly entitled to the extra time, so you should not feel guilty about making use of it.
