mahrukh's gyg!!

hi!! i'm mahrukh and i'm sitting my GCSEs this summer. a bit about me -- i would say im quite creative, i really like doing drawing, painting etc. (not that i have the time rn😭) but i also really like maths and science, and i'm planning to do maths, further maths, chemistry and physics for A-level. there's this one 6th form i really want to get in to, but it's pretty competitive so ideally i would get majority 9s, maybe a few 8s/7s. here's where i stand with my mock grades vs. my predicted:

maths (edexcel): got a 9, predicted a 9

eng. lang. (aqa): got a 7, predicted an 8 (although in y10 i was at a 9 so it would be nice to push this a bit further)

eng. lit. (aqa): got a 6, predicted a 7 (not my best subject, definitely need to work on this to get at least 7/8 in the real thing)

bio (ocr): got a 7, predicted an 8

chem (ocr): got a 7, predicted a 7 (some questions got leaked so ended up with a 7 despite 81%, i would really like a 9)

physics (ocr): got a 9, predicted a 9

rs (ocr, short course): got a 6, predicted a 7 (would like at least a 7/8)

fine art (aqa): got a 7, predicted a 7, but if i do well in component 2, i think i ccould maybe get an 8

french (aqa): got a 9, predicted a 9

german (aqa): got a 9, predicted a 9

photography (aqa): got a 3, predicted a 3 (i promise its not as bad as it looks💀 this was only marked once when i had loads of missing work, now i've done the work and just waiting for a remark)

so yeah, there's a lot here that i'm super happy with, but also some areas i should work on before exams to get my desired grades. i think rn i will prioritise bio, chem and the englishes (+keeping up with my 2 coursework subjects)

good luck to everyone doing exams!!! we got this🥳

--p.s. if anyone has good (free) revision resources/hacks for revising rs, eng lang or eng lit pls put me on i have no clue how to revise for them🥲--

Hiya! Currently in Y13 and doing the same A-levels you wish to do (happy to answer any questions you may have on those!)

"p.s. if anyone has good (free) revision resources/hacks for revising rs, eng lang or eng lit pls put me on i have no clue how to revise for them🥲"

I hope these can help you:

RS, got a 9: Honestly, it depends on your exam board. I do not know how much advice I can give other than constant repetition of past paper questions for this one! Do feel free to tap into other exam boards' past paper questions. I know this is often argued against because not each exam board has the same specification (so do double check!), it can be absolutely worthwhile. Absolutely do remember your definitions. Probably the easiest marks to get and yet so many overlook them. I cannot stress this enough. Depending on your exam board (I did eduqas, which does not necessarily have a very strict mark scheme in my opinion, unsure how it differs to OCR) definitions make an insane difference.

Eng. lang, got a 9: I did the same exam board as you for both English subjects so my advice could help a bit more. Practice past papers, and look at model answers for grade 9 responses for the writing parts! It should introduce you to valuable techniques you may be able to integrate into your own work. Research some synonyms you could use, and, at the start of your exam, write down every type of punctuation you can think of and treat it as a checklist at the top of your page. The examiners reward you for using a variety. Seems easy to remember but, amidst the GCSE pressure, it is very easy to forget. Make sure you know where to use semicolons especially! It is a common error to misplace them!

Eng. lit, got an 8: I feel as though the savemyexams notes can help a lot on the poetry. Otherwise... Absolutely scourge the internet, any website you can access freely for alternative interpretations of quotes or poetry. It genuinely help so much to be given a fresh perspective from other professionals. That is all I can truly say. BUT! If your english teacher is willing (which they should be, really!), do make practice essays and show them to get some more advice. You should ideally be committing to a practice essay atleast once a week depending on how much you struggle with English and how much time your other subjects take up. Time is very scarce.

((( P.S. do not look at the questions the previous years got and assume 100% that you will not get something similar. 2023 had a question on Lady Macbeth. I foolishly focused less on her as I was under the assumption that she would not come up in 2024... but lo and behold! She did! I blame that slip on the reason I dropped to an 8.

Quizlet absolutely! Requires you to make an account but is free.
MACBETH - Quotes and Analysis Flashcards | Quizlet
This document has some pretty good techniques. Mentioning techniques that Shakespeare used can help too! Adding context is crucial if you want an 8 or a 9!
Macbeth Quotes Analysis: Themes, Techniques, and Interpretations (ENG 101) - Studocu

Happy to provide some for the poetry too if you would like! Just let me know whether you are doing War & Conflict or Love & Relationships.
