Harris Westminster Interview

Hello, I have just about passed the entrance exams for Harris Westminster Sixth Form (by 1 mark) and have managed to get an interview on February 14th- my interview subject is biology. I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to prepare for the interview and what HWSF expect, especially considering that I am currently tier 4 in terms priority and I'm pretty sure I need to do really well on my interview to get into hswf since I barely passed the entrance exam and the overall score will be my entrance exam score + interview score.
Any advice or help would be really appreciated!

Hey! I think that they prioritize interviews over entrance exam marks, as I remember reading the policy, and it said something about 1 entrance exam mark being 4 interview marks. Can't remember it exactly though.

They enroll roughly 300 people per annum. Similar schools, like LAET, have a much higher ratio of offers to spaces of 1:3 (3x).

They do this to account for missed grades, second options, etc.

HWSF has a much longer application process so I’d imagine their ratio is lower.

They can filter out bad students with the entrance exam and most would have to be committed to even do the exam.

For the sake of my argument, its a 2:3 ratio (1.5x)

P1 & P2 Total -> 274

HWSF states that roughly half of their cohorts are FSM. They enroll roughly 300 people annually, so 150 spaces for FSM. This means 225 offers given out.

That’s a 82.12% acceptance rate if you are FSM and have passed the entrance exam.

For the remaining groups, P3 & P4, total is 435

Given there are 150 offers left, the mean acceptance is 51.72%.

These are EXTREMELY rough numbers. Take it with a massive grain of salt. However, regardless, you have a very good chance at this stage. So don’t sweat it.

PS. In the email, they tell you what kind of questions you'll be asked.

Hey, I am not really sure where this comes from but in previous years the interview was out of 160.

I haven’t found credible sources that say otherwise.

Part 1 -> 7 minutes, a topic you have prepared to discuss with the interviewer. Must be outside of the GCSE/A level Curriculum.

Part 2 -> 8 minutes, you will get a question.

For maths I have heard it is similar to a UKMT Intermediate end-of-paper question.

For English, it's usually a difficult poem or extract you must analyse in front of your interviewer.

You are supposed to “think outloud”, they want to figure out your thought process and get an understanding on how teachable you are.

For the topic, most of my friends have chosen uni-level stuff to attempt to wow their interviewer; this is a pattern I have observed in previous successful applicants too.

Outside of A level curriculum?? Are you sure? the topic I've been revising for the interview is A level

"which demonstrates that you enjoy learning beyond the confines of an exam-board specification" - I have interpreted this to mean that but at the same time, I think they are referring to just GCSEs so you should be fine.

Hopefully my research was useful, I spent like 2hrs yesterday sifting through forms
and then calling up friends of friends for advice on the interview. Mostly for myself but I thought I’d share

What is your timeslot btw? I feel so bad for those who have to come in at 8:30am.

Ok that's good then, thank you for your hard work! My interview is at 11am, I was hoping it would be later, but now I'm genuinely so happy with it after finding out other people have it at 8:30 in the morning. What time is your interview? and what subject are you doing?

The marks for these will be combined with the exam marks with the weighting 1 (interview marks): 4 (test marks) to get an overall score. This is what it says in the admissions policy, am I bugging or does that mean the test marks are waited more ?

Bahahah, I was rambling too. I didn't even get a question, we just had a conversation about politics and current affairs. I had some rebuttals to his argument, he seemed surprised and somewhat combative, but in a good way? Some students decided to watch me and they said I did great but truthfully think I flaunked it lol

I mean, they seemed very adamant that I passed, even when I questioned them.

That's my only hope; that they weren't simply being polite as many would be in this situation.

Nope, you're right, from what I've heard, the entrance exam is out of 540 and the interview is out of 160. Last year the pass mark to get an offer was around 551 I think, so yeah the test is worth a lot more than the interview

Sadly not as well as I'd hoped it would go. I was already feeling super nervous, and the interviewer kept staring me down and look sort of annoyed the whole time? She didn't even smile once so I ended up pretty much forgetting everything I prepared for part 1 and was just talking to talk tbh. Part two wasn't that bad surprisingly, so I'm hoping that carries me lmao

My interview went so bad, hopefully I can still manage to get a place I got 504 on my entrance exam. But the second part of the interview where they asked me a maths question went horror. The first part of the interview went fine I think
