Durham application appeal

I'm attempting to appeal my offer for durham uni as they gave me bbb when they said on the phone that they would take the abc equivalent given extenuating circumstances. Given that theyve sent me an offer which I cant achieve given the fact that I cant resit my a level in which I got the c, I just wanted to know what peoples experiences were with appeals if any?

Did you get the name and job title of the person who said they would accept ABC?

no I should've done, a massive oversight on my behalf (definitely general ug admissions though, ik that probably doesnt narrow it down much) im looking to see as to weather the admissions office have the transcript of the conversation I had with her. regardless of my attempt though, they shouldn't have sent the offer if they arent prepared to take abc as they can see that 2 of my a levels were sat last year and this year pending (im on a 3 year course)

Hiya!

I would recommend contacting Durham Undergraduate Admissions as soon as possible in writing to clarify this. In the email, explain the date/approximate time of the phone call, that it was with General UG Admissions, and that you were advised ABC (or the equivalent) would be acceptable due to extenuating circumstances.

It’s also worth politely asking whether there’s any record or log of that call, as it informed your decisions. Make sure you clearly state that the current BBB offer isn’t realistically achievable because the C can’t be resat, and that this would have been apparent from your qualification history.

Admissions can then advise whether this should be handled as a clarification, reconsideration, or a formal appeal, and it’s important to follow their process exactly. If you are particularly anxious about this, I would definitely recommend giving them a phone call but also keeping everything logged officially on email, to avoid anything similar to this to arise in the future.

I hope this can be sorted for you. Best of luck! Any further questions do please get in touch.

Hi there this is exactly what ive emailed to the study.ac email, as this was the email I was contacted on regarding the offer, should I have instead emailed the admissions?

the only thing with that was that ug admissions told me to fill out a contact form that got taken down presumably as on my end it comes back with a 404 error

Hi!

Have you tried contacting and speaking to admissions through the Ask us a question on the Durham Website.
You can also call on 0800 987 4120. The phone lines are open Monday to Friday 10am - 1pm.

Hopefully you can contact someone who can guide you through this issue.

hello,

the admissons department completely ignored my request for a transcript of the phone call and offered me two unrelated alternative courses, if they dont give me a transcript of the call or the audio recording then ill have to submit an FOI request

will be. but the call isn’t the be all and end all, my case still stands without it, and regardless they shouldn’t just straight up ignore me. if they don’t have it they could at least acknowledge it
Obviously depends on the wording of the call, but they may have been advising that equivalent results will be considered/accepted on results day, (a misunderstanding about you having achieved grades), not that they would issue that as an offer.

When communicating with them, I would point out that your grades are achieved, (this is easy to miss when you are processing thousands of candidates with pending results), and that you are not retaking so you cannot meet the offer as it currently stands. It may be as straightforward as them missing this.

yeah that could be the case of them not realising, however not being willing to at least acknowledge my request is just out of order imo. they said i could retake without considering retaking would cost me over 1000 lol

Generally speaking a uni wouldn't issue a transcript just off an initial request. They'd try and resolve it in the first instance which it sounds like they've not done a great job with. As I say, hopefully just an error in spotting that two of your results are final.

yeah i hope that too it’s just the fact that they’ve offered me two courses almost completely unrelated, and their claim that they’ve considered my application in full rather than just saying it’s a mistake and offering me equivalent and/or dropping by one grade that really baffles me

thanks for your help btw man
