Having been bullied throughout my school years, I believe a lot of it came down to being vulnerable and not having a strong support network at the time.
In school, everyone is still figuring themselves out. People are learning who they are, trying to navigate their differences, and sometimes they take it out on others.
Once you leave education, things change. People don’t pay as much attention to who you were; you get the chance to reinvent yourself and decide who you want to become.
In my case, I was targeted mainly because I was taller than most kids and had slightly larger ears than average. It bothered me, and the bullies would use that to provoke me; they would try to get me to react first with a shove, a punch, anything, so I’d end up taking the blame.
These days, things are different. You can record incidents, capture videos, save audio clips, and use them as evidence. None of that was available when I was growing up.
If you’re being bullied [or if anyone reading this is] please know you’re not alone. Reach out confidentially and anonymously to teachers, heads of year, or even the police if it’s seriously affecting you. There is always someone willing to listen and help.
