Matching university offers: Warwick and Exeter help!!!

Hello! so I've applied to Warwick got my offer now my main university was Exeter who have given me an offer of A BB but if firmed can be one grade below and Warwick just offered me ABB (not complAining just simple wondering!) do you think I. Could ask them to match the offer or not in just wondering as Warwick is lovely but Exeter seems a little safer at the minute so it's a bit of a hard decision to make! My grades are very much Russian roulette I'm predicted ABB but since sometimes exams just don't work out or do it's a bit of a gamble so I'm just wondering any advice very much appreciated!!
They won’t match another unis offer.

But they might have some flexibility on results day anyway.

I don't think Warwick would "match" another unis offer. It's up to you to decide which you want to go to.

What course did you apply to?

Just firm the university you would prefer to attend regardless of grades, whatever university you firm you are lined up with and start organizing accommodation for etc etc.

Universities have structured processes for offers to ensure equitable & meritocratic treatment of candidates, it’s not haggling at all cash only market.

Before you got your offers, which one did you see yourself at more ? Are you going to both offer holder days as that may help clarify?

Well I originally was wanting Exeter it seemed very nice lovely I went to an open day got my offer was excited Warwick was kind of like my version of Oxford I didn’t expect an offer but I knew it was very good for sociology so h applied not thinking much of it and now I have second thoughts it looks very modern causal but has higher prestige and all so I feel very lost in my decision making. Unfortunately I’m aborad at the time of Warwick’s offer holder day so I’m not able to attend

@random% do you have an insurance offer with comfortably achievable grades that you would be happy to go to? Historically a greater percentage of students have not met their predicted grades than actually have and UCAS is trying to work with schools to improve this. From the ucas website grade range tool, BBB are the common grades for students at both Warwick and Exeter for your course , you can’t guarantee both would still take you in the event of a dropped grade but it’s certainly not unlikely. They are both great uni’s and i don’t think prestige should be the most important factor, try and have a campus visit at least to Warwick if u can’t make the department offer day ( they do have a few offer holder days coming up even though your department may not be present on all of those).

Hi! Thank you so much for your advice. I do have an insurance offer from Bath spa which I believe is around BBC something like that so is achievable. It’s not my top choice as it is insurance but I do have it lined up. I’m just kind of wondering if the risk of accepting Warwick is too risky since like you said there is a chance if I were to drop a grade I could be accepted but obviously not 100% compared to Exeter. I will have to see if I can arrange for a visit during the offer holder days I think there’s one in March I’m just a little panicked I guess it just feels like a big deal and I don’t want to do the wrong thing. I think prestige Probably is playing an unconscious role in my head just a little but then it does seem better in terms of sociology in rankings

Hi @random%

Those are some great offers. 😊

As the other comments have stated, it's highly unlikely they would match the other offer. Since the offers are similar, I recommend choosing which you would prefer to go to. If your struggling to choose, here are some general comparison points I normally recommend.
Grade requirements 📖- Compare the requirements to get into each university. If it is a close decision between the two, I'd recommend choosing the one with slightly lower requirements to relieve some pressure if possible-
Modules 📚- Head onto the university website and compare the modules for your course of interest. This way you can see which course is more closely tailored to your interests.
Distance 🛣️- This depends on how much you value being in close distance to home, therefore varying importance to everyone.
Placement year 🌇- It's an excellent chance to gain work experience and put you one step ahead when you exit university, so it may be worth seeing if either university offer it for your course
Quality 🎓- What's the reputation of the course? You could look at other students opinions, awards and more.
Cost of living 💵- Which is more affordable? This could take into account travel costs or accommodation costs.

These are general factors you can compare each university on. I also recommend thinking of 3-5 things that are important to you, as you should chose the university you can see yourself enjoying the most. Having a positive mindset while completing your degree with massively enhance your experience and grades.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Warwick by far will help with job applications etc. it’s more highly regarded. Think about future career

It really depends what career the OP is interested in. It’s certainly true for highly competitive industries such as law, consultancy or financial services Warwick is routinely considered advantageous, however id note they are applying for sociology & criminology which is not a common stereotypical applicant.

For the vast majority of jobs campus recruitment is no longer a thing or particularly advantageous, especially considering the industries most commonly associated with the degree in hand here most connected jobs are public sector roles and when applying for jobs in local authorities id be very surprised if they were filtering candidates in this fashion. Of course career perspective is important and OP should consider what they are wanting to do, but i wouldn’t get too caught up on mapping generic stereotypes to a specific circumstance.

Honestly, I wouldn’t expect Warwick to match another offer just because another uni has a slightly lower one. Warwick usually sets its offers based on its own criteria, and they don’t often adjust them individually unless there’s a specific reason.

That said, ABB from Warwick is already quite reasonable, especially if you’re predicted ABB. It doesn’t sound unrealistic compared to your predictions.

If you feel your grades are a bit unpredictable, that’s fair, but sometimes firming the place you actually prefer is better than just going for the “safer” option. Warwick is one of those choices that tends to hold its value long term.

You could email and ask politely, but I wouldn’t rely on them lowering it. The main thing is deciding where you’d rather be if you do hit the grades.

If you prefer the course content at Warwick, you could consider firming it and insuring Exeter. If Exeter is offering to reduce its offer now, it suggests there might be flexibility on results day if you drop a grade. It this doesn't work out, you could then look at potentially picking up Bath Spa in Clearing (its not guaranteed the course will be in Clearing but it is a less popular uni than your other two choices).
