is life at sidney sussex, cambridge as a postgraduate even worth it??

currently at cambridge as an mphil student. put down my current mature college as my sole preference for my phd applicaton because i love it here and it's an amazing community and very close to everywhere i need to be, but was accepted at sidney sussex instead.

is there any benefit to being at sidney as a postgraduate?? especially as it's much much father from my department and supervisor than my current college. sidney sussex also has a smaller and less international postgraduate community, and lack of housing in comparison to my current college. i really dont want to pay exorbitant amounts to rent privately in a place that will likely be comparatively terrible to my accommodation in my current college.

honestly im just gutted. i just dont see any benefit, accommodation/community/department wise to being at sidney and i hate that being rejected from my current college is ******* up my emotions so much

if you got accepted at sidney, it means your current college saw your application first, and chose to reject you. that might help you see your current college without the rose tinted glasses.

yeah i guess but i really dont want to lose out on the community and friends i've made here, plus it really is so much more convenient academic/social wise ☹️
I can't tell you too much about postgrad life from my perspective, but I was there for four years as an undergrad, and, especially in my final year, a large chunk of my friends were postgrad. Sidney is a really great college, postgrad or not, and they have recently redone some of the postgrad accommodation (Cromwell Court). If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them as best as they can.

If you feel strongly about your current college, you could speak to your Senior Tutor and request that you remain in your college. It’s odd that your current college rejected you though, so you should prob pay attention to that point.

I mean it's pretty central - not exactly Girton. The only real question though is what is your alternative? Not do a PhD? Go get a job? I know you're disappointed but you're coming across as a bit entitled.

i reached out to them and apparently i'm just stupid because my application stated "no preference" and so it wasnt even sent to my current college? i do genuinely remember putting down my current college, but now i think something must've gone wrong with the drop down box/option thing as i submitted a couple days before the deadline when the portal gets super laggy and logs you out every 2 minutes. my college's postgraduate admin seems pretty positive that a transfer could be arranged if sidney agrees so hopefully they get back soon

Of course, it is genuinely lovely. I'd recommend having a stroll through the gardens next time it's dry and you're around. Obviously it's nothing compared to when the flowers are in full bloom but it's such a lovely environment and a great atmosphere
