Is it useful to do an EPQ?

I’m currently in year 12 thinking about doing an EPQ but I’m not sure. Is the time/reward ratio good if I’m thinking about doing Dentistry at uni or will it not make much of an impact for the amount of effort I have to put into it?

Hi there,

Overall, it really depends on whether you feel you can balance an EPQ alongside your A-levels, as achieving strong grades in those should always be your main priority. That said, some universities do offer a reduced entry requirement (often one grade lower) if you achieve a high grade in your EPQ. This does vary by institution and course, so it’s important to check the specific Dentistry course pages to see whether the EPQ is taken into account.

Beyond entry requirements, the EPQ can be very beneficial in helping you develop key skills that are useful at university, such as academic writing, independent research, referencing, and critical thinking. It can also give you something strong to discuss in your personal statement or at interview, if you choose a topic related to dentistry or healthcare. The fact that you already have a clear degree goal makes this much easier to do.

Finally, some students find the EPQ a refreshing change from A-level content, as it allows you to explore a topic in more depth and use a wider range of sources, such as news articles, books, documentaries, podcasts, and research papers.

I hope this helps,

Hi! I did an EPQ last year, and while doing it I was singing its praises about learning research skills and reduced uni offers. However in hindsight, it was a lot more effort than it was worth. My firm choice didn’t even take it into account and tbh I learned more about research and referencing in my first month of uni than the whole 2 years doing an EPQ. I personally wouldn’t recommend it, focus on your other A Levels and other super curriculars.

Hey,
None of my unis even considered it but ai am so glad that I did it as I gained so many skills and honestly it helped me in the long term.
It was also a great talking point with my interviews. So if you can balance it then defo do it, which if you are wanting dentistry, getting used to a large workload could help if you don’t sacrafice ur a levels
