Hi there,
Overall, it really depends on whether you feel you can balance an EPQ alongside your A-levels, as achieving strong grades in those should always be your main priority. That said, some universities do offer a reduced entry requirement (often one grade lower) if you achieve a high grade in your EPQ. This does vary by institution and course, so it’s important to check the specific Dentistry course pages to see whether the EPQ is taken into account.
Beyond entry requirements, the EPQ can be very beneficial in helping you develop key skills that are useful at university, such as academic writing, independent research, referencing, and critical thinking. It can also give you something strong to discuss in your personal statement or at interview, if you choose a topic related to dentistry or healthcare. The fact that you already have a clear degree goal makes this much easier to do.
Finally, some students find the EPQ a refreshing change from A-level content, as it allows you to explore a topic in more depth and use a wider range of sources, such as news articles, books, documentaries, podcasts, and research papers.
I hope this helps,
