It doesn’t really matter whether the metal or nonmetal atomises first, as long as they atomise before any electron affinities or ionisation energies since these require there to be gaseous atoms floating about.

This is really a manifestation of Hess’s law (the enthalpy change of reaction is independent of the order in which the intermediate steps occur).
