Long residency route with student finance

Hi everyone, I will be applying for student finance for this year's September University entry.

I currently hold a limited leave to remain visa, and was granted this in october 2022 so i meet the 3 year continuous ordinarily resident before my course requirement. Though i currently hold section 3c leave as i've recently applied to extend my visa and am still waiting on a decision but i did apply before my last visa expired so i still have continuous lawful residency.

I've also lived in the uk for more than half my life (came here when i was 2 and im now 21), and can prove it with school letters, nhs records etc.

Will i be eligible to apply for student finance? Also, if there is anyone who has previously applied for student finance with a similar situation like mine, if you could give me any advice, it'd be very much appreciated, thank you.

Hi there,

You would need to apply when applications open, and because you have a dependent visa we would need evidence of your long residency. We would ask you to send the evidence and the team would review and confirm if this is acceptable or not.

Alternatively, do you have a spouse/family member of an EU/UK national?

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire!

Thanks for responding! Okay, do you have any idea on what stuff they may ask me to provide to prove my long residency? And unfortunately I do not have a family member who is an EU/UK national.

Also, could you tell me any doubts that SFE may have regarding my application? im just very unsure on what student finance may reject me because of. I am meeting all the requirements for my situation, which is 3 year continuous residency and the lived half of your life in the uk criteria, but i know that studnet can be very nit picky and scrutinise people like me.

Also, I don’t understand what “might be eligible” if I meet the criteria. So I can meet the criteria they state which is being ordinary resident for three years before my course, and lived in the uk for half my life, but still only might be eligible?? Is there some sort of hidden criteria that I do not know about that will make me fully eligible? It’s just very vague and doesn’t make sense.

So long as you can provide proof of your long residency in the UK then you'll be eligible for funding. We only can't say for sure now because we need you to apply first: our assessors will be in touch and they'll let you know what evidence they need.

Normally, the evidence we'll ask to see are things like NHS letters, bank statements, employment evidence, or letters from government departments like the DWP. From what you've said you have a lot of this evidence already.

The 2026/26 applications open next month, on the 23rd of March. We'd recommend that you apply as soon as you can and we'll be able to review your details.

Thanks, Graeme

Ah okay, thank you so much for confirming this! I was very confused as to why it’s still only a maybe even if I did provide prof but this clears things up nicely.

Do you have any idea on how long long residency route applications usually take to process? I’m just worried about not being able to book an accommodation in time if my student finance application takes longer than expected (I’ve heard some applications can take up to three month to process).

Thank you so much once again Graeme!! I was stressing about this a lot and you’ve helped to reassure me a little

Hi deniiak,

It will be dependent on the processing timescales at that time, our current processing timescales are 7 working days with subject to change as it is dependent on our volumes at the time.

Thanks, Clare
