marketing degree

Hi, I’m currently studying A-level English Language & Literature, Sociology, and Art, and I’m hoping to study Marketing at university.

I’m really interested in the University of Birmingham, but they require a grade 6 in GCSE Maths. I currently have a grade 3 and am resitting it.

Has anyone been accepted onto a Marketing course with a grade 4 or 5 in Maths? If so, which universities did you apply to or get offers from?

My gcse grades are 6,5,5,5,5,4,3,3,3

Hi ndbsh,

Hope all's going well!

If its the Marketing BSc from Birmingham you're interested in it seems they actually only ask for a 5 in Maths and a 6 in English Lang/Lit? Nevertheless, if you plan to resit then this will not be viewed negatively at all in your application by admissions as most unis will accept resits at any time of your education.

I cannot comment on admissions processes at Birmingham and how much weighting they put on GCSEs, but if you apply to them with the condition that your maths will be resat then they will consider your resit grade and make their decision based on that and not your first grade.

Perhaps consider visiting Birmingham's open days coming up late-June - this will be a really good chance to learn more about the course and also, if there is an information fair, meet some people from admissions who will be able to answer any questions you have about entry grades.

Hoping this helps a bit, best of luck! 🙂

I'm assuming you're in year 12 and will be applying next year? If so, it's good that you are resitting to get your maths grade up as GCSE entry requirements are mandatory. Start searching for marketing courses at other unis and check the GCSE requirements. Other unis in the Midlands that you could consider are Aston, Keele, Leicester, etc.

Hey there, it is really good that you are resitting GCSE Maths. That shows commitment!

At London South Bank University, for our Marketing BA (Hons), we normally require GCSE English and Maths at grade 4 or above. So if you achieve a 4 or higher in your resit, you would meet our standard GCSE requirement.

For A levels, we typically ask for 112 UCAS tariff points, and your combination of English Language and Literature, Sociology, and Art is actually very suitable for Marketing. Those subjects build strong communication skills, creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of people and culture, which are all central to marketing as a discipline.

We assess applications holistically, meaning we look at your overall academic profile, predicted grades, and personal statement, not just one GCSE result. If you improve your Maths to a 4 or above, you would be in a solid position to apply.

You are very welcome to come and check out London South Bank University and see what student life is like. It is one thing reading about a course online, but it is completely different walking around campus and picturing yourself here. We have a Southwark Open Day on Saturday 21st March 2026 where you can meet lecturers, explore the facilities, and get clear answers about courses and support (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days). If you cannot make it for an open day, you can book a campus tour on a day that suits you (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/study/study-at-lsbu/open-days). You can also chat with our current students on Unibuddy to hear their experiences and ask your questions directly (https://www.lsbu.ac.uk/student-life/chat).

Hey @ndbshsjekj

It’s really good that you are resitting GCSE Maths as it shows commitment and resilience, which universities really value!

Also, I currently study Marketing at UWE and LOVE the course, so I rate your choice of degree hehe.

For the Marketing course here, UWE normally require GCSE Maths and English at grade 4 (C) or above. So if you achieve a 4 or higher in your resit, you would meet the standard GCSE requirement for our course.

For A levels, UWE typically asks for around 112–120 UCAS tariff points (depending on the year of entry). Your subjects are actually very well suited to Marketing, in fact I also studied sociology which I found helpful with some of the marketing modules. They can help to develop strong communication skills, creativity, analysis of audiences, and understanding of social trends, all of which are central to marketing.

I found that UWE assesses applications more holistically, so they look at your predicted grades, personal statement, and overall profile, not just one GCSE. For example, I didn't achieve the A level grades but I did other things (e.g. a short course and webinars) to show dedication and commitment. With this being said, it isn't guaranteed you will get in to any university if you don't meet the grade requirements, so its really great to hear the work you're putting in to resit maths GCSE.

If you're looking at a variety of marketing courses, you can find UWE's details here: https://courses.uwe.ac.uk/N500/marketing

Best of luck with everything, and do let me know if you have any questions.

As above, normally GCSE grade requirements for specified subjects (e.g. "6 in GCSE Maths") are hard requirements and would be automatically rejected if you don't meet them. So you would need to be aiming to resit and achieve a 6 to apply to that course if that's what they require. But as the Bath rep has helpfully pointed out they just require a 5 in maths (and a 6 in English language) so you should only need to achieve a 5 in your resit

You can also resit it again in year 13 if needed potentially - you'd list the grade as "pending" on your UCAS application (along with your previously achieved grades in the subject) and if they made an offer it would be conditional on achieving that 5 in maths (along with whatever A-level conditions there are).

Hi Thanks for replying 🙂 Just wondering, what kind of stuff did you include in your personal statement like supercurricular things etc? Also, what modules are you taking? Would you say there’s a lot of presentations? And if there are, are they usually to a small group or a big audience? I don’t mind presenting, but I do get quite nervous beforehand.
