Why Universities Must Be Transparent About Allegations

I saw some posters in the park claiming there was a rape cover‑up by the university and, honestly, I brushed it off at first but then I Googled it and found a couple of articles, see below, about the University of Salford refusing to confirm or deny whether a rape allegation was ever reported.

According to what I read, the university has met legal requests to answer simple questions like “did someone report a rape?” or “were NDAs used?” with blanket objections in court, saying it’s all about data‑protection and victim anonymity, and even rejecting proposals for anonymised or redacted answers.

What concerns me most isn’t the allegation itself it’s the lack of transparency. If institutions genuinely want to protect students and support survivors, then refusing to say yes or no to whether serious allegations were made doesn’t inspire confidence. On paper, policies might look good (the uni says it won’t use NDAs in these cases), but if in practice they won’t even clarify whether reports were filed or records exist, that just fuels distrust.

Universities have a responsibility to create safe environments and be accountable not hide behind procedural legalese while students and survivors are left confused about what actually happened. Openness (with appropriate confidentiality safeguards) is essential if students are to trust the systems that are supposed to protect them.
