University of East Anglia medicine with a gateway year.

I'm actually very lost on whether I should be applying for medicine with a foundation year at UEA. I am currently in year 12 taking Biology, Chemistry and Maths and my predictions are ABB (I am planning to keep them the same when applying). My first question is, if I get an offer but get higher than ABB in my actual exams, do I get rejected? I meet 2 of the contextual requirements? My GCSE's are are 9,8,8,7,6,6,5,5 and I have a 2 distinction in a BTEC Level 2, would this be enough? Let's say I get 2000/2600 with a band 1 or 2, would this also be enough for UEA with a gateway year? I am currently lost and want to get some answers.

Hi there!

If you get higher than your predicted grades/ the grades in your offer, you shouldn't get rejected! The typical entry requirements for MBBS Medicine are three A's, so if you met this, then you should be eligible to apply for that. MBBS Medicine with a Gateway Year offers BBB or ABC, so with your predicted grades, you meet their entry requirements.

In my experience, UEA has been very flexible regarding offering foundation years/switching courses etc, so if you applied for the gateway year, but your grades ended up meeting the requirements for medicine w/o a gateway year, then you could contact admissions and ask them about switching. Vice versa, if you applied for the medicine w/o a grateway year but didn't meet the grades, then you could ask them about the foundation year! You could always contact admissions ([email protected]) and ask them for more advice, they might be able to point you in the right direction!

@UEA Rep Daniel C - you may be better able to advise on this?

I hope this is in part helpful! I can try to answer any other questions you may have!

Hi!

I think they should be, yes! This is what the website says:

‘minimum of six subjects at grade 5 or B including English Language, Mathematics and either a single science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or Double Science.’

It seems that most of your grades are higher than a 5, so you should be alright

Hi, you need 6 GCSEs at grade 5 and above including English Language, Mathematics and either a single science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics) or Double Science. BTECs aren’t accepted for GCSEs with them.

I am applying for 2026 entry with A*AA predictions and 1810 b2 UCAT and I have done my interview. You do not get rejected even with higher predicted grades or even if you achieve higher on your actual a levels. As long as you meet their contextual criteria, you are fine.

For reference, this was a response from admissions when I emailed them about grades and stats:

Each year we review achieved grades and if an applicant to Gateway Year meets the minimum requirements to be accepted to the MBBS Medicine A100 programme, we will endeavour to offer them a place on this course if places are available. If places are full, we would look to offer a deferred place. Please note that applicants are only guaranteed a place on the course they have applied to, if they meet the offer conditions and a course change cannot be guaranteed.

In 2025 cycle, we didn’t course change any applicants up from A104 to A100 because none of the applicants met to do so. In 2024 cycle we course changed six applicants up to A100. In 2023 we course changed ten applicants up to A100.

Hope that helps, lmk if u got more questions.

Dyk whether they use GCSE's and A levels as cut offs and what the UCAT cut off score was for the Medicine with a gateway year course?

They do not use GCSEs or A-levels as any sort of weighting. To get selected for the interview, 100% of your UCAT is weighted within your applicant pool- every year this varies. They then score the UCAT 50% after interview and the other 50% interview performance, that’s all. GCSEs and A-levels are just checked as a requirement just like your contextual for the gateway.

There isn’t a cutoff for UEA, each year it varies. But feel free to look at sites like Reddit to see what the lowest UCAT you can find for people that got an interview/offer with UEA Gateway, more commonly on the r/ucat forum. From my experience this year, majority had a UCAT around 1800 and I think some above 1700 but I don’t think lower, don’t take my word, do your research. Also don’t aim for that ucat, try get high man you got this.

Lmk if u need anymore help

For some extra information, with gateway, they tend to invite 50% of candidates to interview and around 70% get offers after interview. This year for 2026 entry: “We aim to interview approximately 150 applicants between November and February to fill 40 places.”. They hand out more offers than places so dw, for example I think in a prior year, 149 were interviewed and 107 given offers, or something like that. It’s online so feel free to search it up for the actual stats, but its somewhere around that.
