Foundation Art Questions

I’m thinking of applying to SGS college Bristol school of art to do a foundation art course after I finish my A levels this year before going to university to also study an art course. SGS college offers a UAL, awarding body foundation art course, and so the final grade (determined by the last unit) can either be a fail, pass, merit or distinction. I want to take this foundation course to develop and explore myself as an artist, but I also want to gain valuable skills to prepare me for university, especially at an art university. I was wondering, do art universities really care what grade you get in an art foundation course as long as you pass it, as I had a discussion with the leader of another art foundation course at another school and they said that as long as you have passed a foundation art course, it doesn’t really matter on what level you have passed it, as doing an art foundation course alone looks great on a university application. I was just wondering what anybody thinks about that advice, if universities really do care whether you get a distinction or not, as long as you pass the foundation course. This is because I am doing a level art at the moment, and it’s fun however I am finding it stressful, and the amount of pressure in a level art isn’t something I want to do for an extra year before university. I’d love to do a university course in art, even though it’ll be quite stressful, but it will be the only subject I’m studying at uni and so I can focus on it fully, however I’d preferably not like to go through another year of stress and lots of pressure in an art foundation course before university. I know that it will still be somewhat stressful and will be a lot of work, as a foundation course is still an academic course, however I was wondering how stressful, pressurising and hard a foundation course is, especially a UAL one at SGS college. As I’m not too keen on the idea of it being very similar to A level art?? Thank you!!
If you are worried about the workload in an Art Foundation course, you will likely struggle immensely with the workload of an art course at university level. Generally these things go upwards in their expectations of you. Not to mention, to be successful in many highly competitive creative industries, there is an expectation that you are going beyond the requirements of your course.

I would assess whether you think this is the right decision for you.

Hi @laura.glendo

Great to hear that you are considering a art and design foundation course. I did this and it was really helpful and a great opportunity!

In terms of how similar it is to a-level art, I didn't personally study art a-level but according to my friends who did on the art foundation it is very different, as it is much more independent and you have a lot of control over what type of art you want to create and the themes.

Foundation year is also a great stepping stone between a-level (level 3) and university (level 4) as you move up levels. I believe it really helped me prepare for the uni workload and it gives you an extra year to figure out how to best manage your time, workload and create strong routines.

It's also good to try new mediums, build a portfolio and just see if art is the right course for you in university, as you can always choose something else afterwards if it is not for you.

I hope this helps give some insight and good luck making your decision

HI there!

That's so exciting to hear that you're considering doing an art foundation! I did one too!

I did one here at Norwich Uni Arts, as an integrated foundation year called Year 0... leading me straight into year 1 afterwards. Not only did my foundation year (mine was in graphics) allow me to explore various creative process that I hadn't had the chance to before, but it also gave me a year to learn the softwares required for year 1 of my course and get familiar with the university, the university staff, the campus, the submission processes and also make friends before entering year 1! I defo found this all so helpful.

I know you're considering other unis - but I am more than happy to answer any questions if you do have any 🙂 Best of luck with everything!

With Foundation you are only taking Art not the other subjects, but there will be a considerable amount of work. I did an art foundation then Chelsea College of Art. I know someone who was just recently offered Goldsmith's with a pass at Foundation. He has grades A* A B at A'level. If grades are low or not meeting average offer then I expect that a conditional offer may request a higher grade on the Foundation. It's certainly not a gap year, and a lot of self motivation and drive is needed to keep going with an Art Foundation and especially if you are meeting new people and don't start out with friends on the course. There are several challenges but if you enjoy Art and want to do a degree in Art or an applied creative subject the foundation is a very sensible way forward. This can also help with ascertaining what branch of Art or related subject you want to focus on in future, such as Fine Art, Fashion or Architecture.
