need urgent help - gcses

I can only do eight gcses as a home student , we booked the wrong exam board for RS by accident and it has no resources whatsoever. Also booked the wrong english literature and language exam boards but it's fine . I'm very worried this will hold me back for applications to unis such as imperial and UCL. I want to do an extremely competitive course . Feels like my dreams have been shattered. Could anyone offer some insight on this please??

Hi Ella,
I would think universities care far more about your overall grades than which exam board you took. I looked at UCL's requirements page and they accept a wide array of exam boards, and seem to understand circumstances which restrict the number of GCSEs you can take. I saw no mention of restricting students as long as they meet the grade equivalents. You can see more here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/study/prospective-students/undergraduate/how-apply/entry-requirements

They will also care significantly more about your A level scores than your GCSEs, so the main focus should be on achieving strong grades moving forward.

As for the RS exam board, try to find external materials where possible. Look closely at the syllabus content and use that to locate past papers. Practising these will help you refine your exam technique and become familiar with the style of questions.

Your dreams aren’t shattered, this is a classic case of worrying about running before you’ve learned to walk. Focus on preparing effectively, and you’ll still be in a strong position for competitive university applications 😉

Hope this helps,

Hey @ella34034,

I'm sorry to hear you've had difficulties with booking your exams.

What exam boards were you hoping to book with and which ones did you book with? Whilst universities aren't typically bothered by the exam board students choose, I understand how switching specifications can throw your revision off.

Luckily, there's usually a lot of cross-over content between exam boards. Even with limited resources for this particular exam board, as long as you have the correct specification you should be able to use external revision resources as well.

Hope this helps,
Eve (Kingston Rep).
