DPhil - Colleges choices/offer

Hey everyone,

It will probably take some time before we hear back from the colleges, so why not discuss it while we wait?

I'll start:
- Program: DPhil in Clinical Neurosciences - Accepted
- College choice: Magdalen
- Funding status: No funding so far

I had my interview last week and waiting to hear back. Kellogg college is my first choice though!

Noob question. I didn’t state any college preference thinking that this might maximize my funding opportunity. But should I have chosen a college? Have I shot myself in the foot?

In terms of funding, nothing will change. Colleges allocate funding independently of the college selection itself (with a few exceptions: for example, small scholarships from Lincoln require enrollment in the college to be eligible).

From my understanding (I could be wrong), colleges start by selecting candidates from among those who have indicated a preference and then from the general pool. So you're less likely to get into a very “competitive” college.
That being said, I've seen a trend on Reddit of people who applied openly and got into “prestigious” colleges like Merton, Hertford, Corpus Christi, etc.

Anyway, colleges are less important for DPhils than for undergraduates. Any college can be great. It's mainly an excuse to meet other students )

i'm in the same predicament. some colleges state that preference will be given to those who put them down as a first choice. however, they dont exclude you for not having a preference. it's worth noting that majority of colleges do not have this preference so i'm hoping it will be fine.

It is so stressful... I have applied to a lot of external scholarships but none of them can cover the international fees + stipend entirely..

Did you read this tread?

I've seen that these ones are already out:

Exeter College

Linacre College

Lincoln College

Magdalen College

Merton College

Reuben College

St Hilda's College

St Hugh's College

Does anybody knows if other colleges have sent out invites already?

Hi all! Here's my updates for Oxford:

- Program: DPhil in Physiology, Anatomy, and Genetics - Accepted
- College choice: University (rejected)
- College assigned: Kellogg
- Funding status: No funding so far

Also, I believe the ILESLA DTP thread for this year has had some people report they've already gotten college offers alongside their DTP offer. I think Reuben was one of the colleges someone got an offer to!

Just got my acceptance at Wolfson; I unusually listed this as my first choice since I was already an UG at a blended undergraduate/graduate college and decided that I wanted to be somewhere a bit more mature for my postgrad : )

Got my Balliol College offer 4 working days after my DPhil offer! My top choice! I wonder though how quick that was 😅 No news yet on funding.

I was told by my potential supervisor that they normally put forward very strong candidates as there's more chances of them securing the funding, so people strong academically
