Year abroad question

I applied to international development at Kings College London. I applied for normal international development because I didn’t know what my financial situation would’ve been like in three years. But I kind of want to do a year abroad now, which is a different ucas code. So when I get my offer, do you think I can still do year abroad if I call the uni up or like on my first day of school Tell them that I want to do a year abroad??

Hi there!

I am currently on a year abroad, studying in Australia, so I can help to provide you with some reassurance regarding this, especially the financial side of studying abroad.

I've had a quick look for you, and I think typically you can switch on to a year abroad course, there might be slightly different (higher) first and second year grade requirements though. It is definitely worth contacting the admissions team once you receive an offer, it will be easier to switch before you start, they may tell you to wait until you start, but at least you will know! I can't comment on what exactly this will look like for you though since I don't go to KCL haha.

Regarding finance for years abroad, if you are in receipt of a tuition and maintenance loan through Student Finance England, you will still be eligible for this for an exchange year. The maintenance loan is typically higher for years abroad, and there are other funding options available, such as the SFE travel grant, which can help cover the cost of things such as flights. Your university may also offer some financial support for year abroad students. If this is something you're worried about though, your uni will likely have a study abroad team who you can speak to when you arrive, and they can help you with exploring funding options, giving you more time to prepare. Also, if you apply for student finance before you decide on studying abroad, try not to worry, you can usually change this later, or next time you reapply!

I hop this helps, let me know if you have any other questions, I can do my best to try and answer them!

Good luck,
Jas
