Which university?

My son is torn between Newcastle and Sheffield to study a Geography degree. Can anyone share experiences to help his decision?
Thanks

Congratulations!

Both are excellent unis. It is very difficult to objectively differentiate the unis wrt academic standards, graduate prospects or so. Maybe your son could decide on his own preference. Your son could probably make up his mind after visiting the cities, joining the offer holder days or open daysand looking closely into the course modules. Good luck.

Hey Fharwood, 👋

It's great to hear your son is interested in a Geography course! Both Newcastle and Sheffield are great choices and I'm sure he'd be happy at either. 😀

I can't speak for Newcastle but I know someone who did their degree in the School of Geography and Planning and they absolutely loved it! The support and quality of teaching is really good and the Geography course in particular is fully accredited by the Royal Geographical Society.

The Geography department at Sheffield will also cover field trip costs and there are lots of opportunities to travel into the very local Peak District for research and studying. 🌳

I personally love the university: I think the campus is really easy to navigate and the buildings aren't that far apart for a city campus. There are loads of places to go to study, grab coffee or some food, or just go for a walk such as around Weston Park or the Botanical Gardens. And of course the Peak District is so easy to get to with public transport.

If he hasn't already, I would definitely say to visit both cities to see how they feel and if he could see himself living there and also to attend any open days! I knew Sheffield was the right choice for me after attending my first open day and I subsequently did my BA, MA and now PhD all at Sheffield! 😄

It could also be useful to speak directly with a Geography student. If you press this link, you can chat with a student ambassador who is currently enrolled on the course and they will be able to give you more detail on things like the day-to-day on the course, fieldwork opportunities, workload, contact hours etc.

Please let me know if you have any more questions about studying and living in Sheffield and I would be more than happy to help. 😀

All best wishes,
Phoebe
