MSc Occupational Therapy - Salford Or MMU

Hi guys I’ve jst graduated with an undergraduate degree in Psychology. I’m looking to do a Masters in Ofcupational Therapy it’s pre registration and 2 years full time. I’ve been accepted into both Salford and MMU but I’m struggling to make a choice as both courses seem really similar. Has anyone done these courses at these unis before or have any insight that could help me decide please thank you

Also if you’ve done the course can you also tell me ur experience with student finance and NHS learning support fund please

Hey @juicycc 👋,

Congratulations on your graduation and on your offers for a Master's in Occupational Therapy! 🎉 It's exciting that you're considering the University of Salford! I recently graduated from Salford, and I really enjoyed my time here

The Occupation Therapy course sounds brilliant - you get a lot of hands-on experience with four supervised placements (over 1000 hours!) across hospitals and community settings in Greater Manchester. The teaching balances theory with real-world practice, and there's a strong focus on preparing you to work, with opportunities for project-based or research placements. Once you've successfully completed the course you're qualified to go straight into the field too, so its great for getting you right into the heart of OT!

Salford itself is really supportive, with a really friendly community and helpful staff 🤗 If you can try to attend a postgraduate open day or virtual session (the next one is on the February 25th) you can book it here! It's a great way to get a feel for the university and meet staff and students.

Funding-wise, you can get support for pre-registration healthcare postgraduate programmes via Student Finance's undergraduate funding support, despite it not being an undergraduate degree. Its more to do with the course being a pre-registration course that trains you, rather than the level of study. SFE allows for second undergraduate degree funding for cases like this in healthcare (so don't worry if you've already taken out UG finance for your Psychology degree, you can still be eligible), with the NHS having more information on funding options here! I'd always recommend contacting student finance directly to get more personalised advice on second healthcare degree funding though, as obviously finance is really personal 😊

Good luck with your offers,
Du'a

All OT courses are approved by the HCPC and are therefore kept to the same standard and cover the same content. It won't make any difference to your career which uni you study at. Ask for copies of this year's timetables from the unis and compare when placements are held and consider placement locations.

In terms of funding, pre-registration masters attract undergraduate funding so you apply via the undergraduate route for both tuition fee and maintenance loans. Applications open on 23 March for courses starting Sep/Oct 2026. You need to wait for confirmation of your SFE funding before applying for the NHS LSF. The application process is straightforward and doesn't take long. If you apply in summer that is fine for courses starting in Sep - the first payment would be in November.
