Mathematics and Actuarial science

I've received offers from both Manchester and Southampton to study mathematics and actuarial science; however, I'm not sure which one to pick. How would you compare these universities, and which one would you recommend?
From the actuarial side, you may want to compare which/how many exemptions each course gives from the professional exams. From the maths side just look at the range and number of options available as a general indicator, and also see if they have options within your specific area(s) of interest.

Also if you can, try and visit each uni (on an offer holder day for example) to get a feel for what the department, uni, and city are like in each case. Southampton I suspect is more campus based than Manchester for example, so that's going to be a different experience if that is the case

Manchester gives exemptions from 5 exams whereas's Southampton gives 6. Would this be a big difference? Also I'm not sure whether I'd be more suited to a campus lifestyle or a more city one 😁.

Well it may save you some time and money on graduation when you're in a grad scheme to have fewer professional exams to do  but whether that's a big factor for you is uo to you to decide :biggrin:as for which city/uni you prefer this is why it's really valuable to go to open/offer holder days to get a feeling in person what it's like!

Southampton uni is close to city centre. Uni is not out of town completely.

Hi @Ardatemiz,

Congratulations on your offers!

I would definitely agree with artful_lounger and say that visiting both universities for their Offer Holder Visit Days is a must. You can chat to staff and current students, explore facilities and the places you'd be studying, and visit accommodation. But it's also just a great chance to experience what it's like to walk around campus and visit Southampton. If you can't visit us in person, we've got a range of Virtual Offer Holder Visit Days in the diary. You can check the dates through your offer holder pack.

I'd also compare the courses again. Does one stand out to you more than the other? Look at the modules each university offers. Are there any you feel drawn to? And you mentioned exemptions in this thread. Look into how this would impact your career goals.

Also, look at the support available. Southampton has careers support and opportunities built into our degrees. We also offer student support 24/7 365 year-round.

I think comparing cities would be a good thing as well. For Maths and Actuarial Science you'd be based at our Highfield Campus, which is a quick bus ride away from the main city, with loads of green spaces around you.

Wishing you all the best of luck on your journey,

Bea

Hey Ardatemiz, congrats on the offers both Manchester and Southampton are solid for maths/actuarial science, but they hit different notes. Manchester edges it for me if you're aiming for top-tier reputation, stronger research vibes, bigger industry links (especially in London finance circles), and a more intense academic environment their actuarial program is super well-regarded and often pulls in better placement opportunities. Southampton is great too though: smaller classes, more personal tutor support, a chill campus feel, and their actuarial stream is really practical with good exemptions from professional exams. If rankings and prestige matter most, go Manchester; if you want a balanced, supportive setup without feeling lost in the crowd, Southampton's a strong pick. Either way you'll be set, but I'd lean Manchester for the extra career boost. When you're grinding through those calculus-heavy modules and need quick clarity on derivatives to keep up, a derivative calculator that spits out instant step-by-step solutions with graphs can make all the difference https://edubrain.ai/derivative-calculator/ handles chain rule, product rule, higher-order, partials, implicit stuff super fast and free upfront, showing the full logic so you actually get why it works instead of just copying an answer. It's a lifesaver during late-night problem sets when time is tight. Good luck deciding, you'll smash it at either
