confused about EPQ

we do ours with AQA, but I can't find clear guidelines on what you're actually allowed to do?? i've been told about the structure, how it'll be assessed, and that it should be what you wanna do at uni. however i thought that you're not allowed to do anything that directly crosses over with your subject specs at any point, which is an issue for me because the only things i'd really be interested in doing an epq on crosses over with politics, as the pol spec covers like, all of british politics??? and some of history. it isn't like i'd be answering an a level politics (or history) question or anything close though, so i'm not sure what would be allowed??
i've asked my epq supervisor and was told i can do anything, as long as i don't use the same thing for coursework. (also any epq tips generally would be great, i'm pretty in the dark about the entire process, and have no idea what i should be doing right now to make sure i'm on track)

Hey 👋. I did an EPQ with AQA. What I would do is probably start formulating what the specific title and topic for your EPQ would be and then run that by your supervisor. I can give a few tips. Reference things as you go. Pleaseee don't leave it till the very end I'm telling you now it's a real pain. Also take full advantage of the planning stage. Plan everything you want to do - the research, the structure of your essay (or your artifact if that's what you're doing) etc before you actually do it. That will make the writing stuff so much easier. Try do little and often rather than leaving lots till it's too late - an EPQ is supposed to be kinda fun because you're doing a topic that you enjoy so don't let deadlines make it stressful for you! Also if you're not sure how to plan about your research I would start with first figuring out a structure for you essay - figure out the aims of your EPQ and what areas you are tackling - that will help you figure out exactly what you need to know. And of course choose a topic that you actually enjoy - EPQs are a lot of work but it's not as bad when you're generally interested in your topic. I think that's all I have for now but feel free to let me know if you want any specific advice 😊

Start off with a general topic that you’d like to do and narrow it down afterwards if you want to do about politics and you are currently studying politics then narrow down what you would like to do to be very specific and check with both your EPQ supervisor and your politics teacher to see if they overlap

Also for a topic like politics make sure not to get biased if your doing something that may involve some perspectives being biased like comparing two political parties and how successful they’ve been or whatever, you cannot be biased at all cause that isn’t what they want

Hi, I did exactly what you shouldn’t do and left mine till last minute and now I only have a few days to get it done. I was wondering if I could get any advice on how to structure the dissertation? I’m stuck not being able to understand the difference between the research review and the discussion part of the essay like what they both actually are and the difference between them, I don’t have primary data just because I feel like my research question and the objectives of my essay would be difficult to get good answers for from people who don’t know much about the subjects. Is only secondary data fine or is primary data necessary? Any advice would be highly appreciated 🙏

Could you tell me exactly what you title + aims are? I think that would allow me to give better more specific advice. Cos structure isn't a one size fits all. As for the differ types of data again I think that depends on what you're actual topic is and what you're hoping to find

My title is ‘What are the Major Legal Implications of Brexit on international Financial and Corporate Markets?’ and then my aims are:
1. To investigate the impact of Brexit on Asset Transfers and the changes of legal framework that caused the alterations.

1.

To explore the Loss of Passporting due to Brexit and the solutions to this barrier.

2.

To discover the changes to supply chains and their causes.

3.

To evaluate the differences in corporate and financial law in the UK and the EU as a result of Brexit.

Sorry for replying this late your message wasn’t showing up for me before

So I don't think you need that much primary data. It would be difficult to get for your topic and also of you're introducing primary data you also need to think about ethics (which is extra work but if you're happy with that then go ahead with it). I think for your essay doing a section on each aim would probably do quite well in terms of structure - and doing that way will make it extra clear that you're actually following your aims and it'll make sure your essay flows. Just make sure you have a conclusion answering your title clearly. That would be my advice. But also see what your supervisor says too

I don't think it's necessary to have primary data though. So if you decide not to include any at all that's fine

Thank you so much! Just one last thing I was confused about is the research review and the discussion part, like what is the difference and what I would write in each section, would I cover all the aims in each and like just over what both sections actually are, i’ve tried searching online but I don’t understand and my supervisor won’t explain it to me.

I'm so really sorry but I'm not sure either - we didn't have anything like that when I did my EPQ. Do you do AQA? Is it on the specification? If it is maybe I can help you decipher it? Sorry I couldn't be more help at the moment
