Mental health nursing l

Hi everyone I’m really interested in studying mental health nursing the only problem is I have fibromyalgia and I’m worried the placements would be painful. Can any adjustments be made in this situation? I suffer with chronic pain some days so the long placement days seem really intimidating

All healthcare courses require a medical/ occupational health screening prior to commencement of studies…it may or may not mean that you would be eligible to continue . Reasonable adjustments for disabilities are far, far more common than when I started in healthcare many years ago but some health conditions are just not compatible with nursing I’m afraid…I’m not a nurse but have had to leave the NHS due to health issues and have seen numerous colleagues do the same, as the NHS can be very poor at “looking after their own”. If you contact the uni’s you are interested in ( you can also speak to their disability services) as there should be info about the process that is followed to clear you for enrolment and for what sort of reasonable adjustments that can be made.

Hi there! I think some universities are better than others at supporting students with chronic conditions/disability, but under the Equality Act 2010 any university must adhere to making reasonable adjustments for you! I also have fibro and other conditions too and I applied and deferred (2026 start) for mental health nursing at Brighton uni. I was meant to start in Sept 2025 but wasn't well enough at the time - but before I deferred my place I had online meetings with the placement team and the disability team and they were all lovely and were very helpful in implementing reasonable adjustments for me on placements and also during teaching blocks too. I hope this helps
