Yr 12, struggling to pick a uni degree

I'm currently in Yr12, studying English Literature, Religious Studies and Geography, predicted BBB. When I started the school year I was considering taking Philosophy and English at university, now I'm conflicted as to whether or not I should take a geography course instead. Any advice?

It’s always a good idea to try some work experience or insight days to get a feel of what the field would be like

Book some uni open days for next term and attend the talks for any of the subjects you might be interested in. Then talk to staff and students about the courses in more detail. It will help you decide which course interests you the most.

Have a look at some modules for each of these on different degree courses, choose whichever you think will interest you more! A good thought exercise could be trying to write a personal statement for each of english and geogrpahy and see which one you have more to say about- I know that if i tried this for biology and maths which are the 2 mains subjects i do then id be able to write miles more on biological sciences than maths.

Why does your school "need" you to make a decision by Easter?

You're going to be spending three years of your life at university; you shouldn't feel rushed into a decision if you're unsure.

Oh, I meant in the context of work experience (sorry for the confusion). I really don't why.

What are you thinking of doing job wise after uni?

the work experience you do doesnt need to be particularly relevant to what you want to do at uni. I did work experience with a STEM company where i was doing office-based stuff (loved it!) but i want to apply for an ecology degree with the aim of going into more outdoors work or research. Try and choose something which could be relevant to a variety of interests, for example if youre split between english and geography you could do some journalism based work experience focusing on travel or an environmental issue or something about migration if you like human geography

I'm currently thinking about urban or transport planning (a geography degree to me feels like the most direct way into this career). Despite this I'm quite indecisive, like 2 weeks ago I was considering a job in journalism or marketing and I worry whether or not my mind will change again. Afterall I have a big interest in city planning games ever since I was a child, yet also have a big interest in both religion and creative writing.

Alright, I'll see what I can do, my school is always providing us with companies that have emailed offering work experience in particular a local council which seems to have characteristics in both

Oh right. It sounds like the urban planning stuff (and similar related careers) would be the way to go.
If you do do a geography like you say you might then obviously you need geography. Double check the course on unis websites to see if there are any other subjects required.

Hi,

It’s completely normal to feel unsure. You’ve still got plenty of time to figure out what you’d like to do.

I’d recommend thinking about which subject you enjoy the most and whether you could see yourself studying it in depth for the next few years. It’s also worth looking into the types of careers each degree can lead to and whether those pathways interest you.

Have a look at university course pages and entry requirements, and compare the modules they offer, as that often makes things much clearer. Attending open days or course taster events can also really help you get a feel for what studying each subject would actually be like.

Hope this helps,

An urban/town planning degree would be the most direct path into this career. Look for courses accredited by the RTPI:
