Am I strong candidate for RHU?

Hello TSR, I am year 12 and I would like to apply for clinical psychology and mental health at Royal Holloway University of London after my gap year so I can save money and gain some work experience.

For my GCSE's I got:

English literature-8
English lang-6
Maths-4
Triple science- all subjects got 4
Spanish-7
IT-5
Geography-4

For my A levels I'm doing english literature, geography and psychology and I'm self studying AS spanish.

For my year 12 work experience I have already attained some for psychology which is so lucky of me icl.

I got to a rubbish state school in a bad postcode, elegible for free school meals, first person to go to uni.

Would I be a strong candidate?

What are your predicteds? They have a highish A level requirement but low GCSE requirements so you would have more chance then some other unis. Here is their contextual offer checker page https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/studying-here/schools-and-colleges/widening-access/contextual-offers/

I honestly don't know right now in my last exams for my A levels I got:

English literature-B+
Psychology-B/C
Geography-C

HOWEVER, I know I can get way higher than these grades once I start revising and locking in which will start now

Your grades need to be stronger to apply - see what they ask for.

If you meet their contextual criteria then you potentially may get an offer around ABB-BBB which sounds reasonable for you to aspire to …depending on when your college gives you their predicted grades, then stepping up for this summer exams should be a good indicator of your potential between now and end of year 13. On the ucas pages you can see the grades ranges of accepted students https://digital.ucas.com/coursedisplay/courses/69e96f0d-f077-3229-06f4-9bd5897d22c4?academicYearId=2026#entry-requirements . Remember ,if you want to take a gap year you can either apply for deferred entry on your initial ucas application or ask the uni if you can defer entry once you have received your results .

Hi there! I am doing Psychology with cognitive and clinical neuroscience at royal Holloway starting in September. I managed to get in with much lower grades that anticipated. I did have some conditions which I think may have helped (my mum had cancer during my a levels so it impacted my mental health and I had to care for her alone). However my GCSE grades weren’t very impressive and I still managed to get in.
I got

English lit- 6
English lang-5
Maths-4
Business-5
Media-8
Sociology-6
science- 54

So not great! Way below my predicteds but I still got in.

In my opinion a strong personal statement and a levels will matter more than GCSEs.

Hi @Liamgriff18,

Thanks for your post, it sounds like you’re already building a really strong foundation for your application! Your A-level subjects are well suited to a degree in Clinical Psychology and Mental Health, and your work experience will definitely strengthen your personal statement. However, we'd recommend you contact our Admissions team, as they'll be able to help you further and discuss your options with you.

Taking a gap year to gain more experience and save money is also a good decision as relevant experience in mental health, education, or care settings will make your application stand out even more. Keep focusing on your grades and building your experience 🙂

Hope this helps!

Best wishes,

Hello,

When applying to university, grades are important, but they’re not the only thing admissions teams look at. A strong application also includes a good personal statement where you talk about your motivation for psychology, your career goals, any relevant work experience, and your curiosity about the subject.
Your work experience in psychology already sounds like a great start, and being proactive about gaining experience during your gap year will definitely strengthen your application.
Also, try not to worry too much about coming from a state school or a disadvantaged background. Many universities take this into account through contextual offers and widening participation schemes. For example, I study BSc Psychology at City, St George’s University of London and they do consider things like being eligible for free school meals or being the first in your family to go to university. It’s always a good idea to apply to a range of universities.

Good luck with your applications and let me know if i can help with anything else!
