Post gap year prep

I am starting English at the university of Liverpool in September and I don't know what I should do to prepare or how difficult it will be to return to education. Has anyone else been in this situation?

Hi @EmilyJ.

I did a gap year prior to starting my university course. Personally, I found the return to education was fine and I felt more prepared for it due to the experiences I had during my gap year and from having a short break from education.

In terms of preparing, you could start to have a look at some relevant reading or research relating to your course. However, this should not be particularly necessary unless you want to get yourself back into the routine of studying. You could have a look at the modules that you will be studying and see if your university recommends anything to do relating to them.

If you are moving away for uni, then now is a good time to start thinking about what you want to get ready beforehand. For example, I started buying things that I needed early to spread out the cost rather than having to buy everything last minute.

Hope this helps!

Hi there!

I also did two gap years and was a bit worried about the return to education but it was completely fine! I thought I would feel really far behind people as I had had a couple of years working rather than at college/sixth form but once I got there I just got back into the swing of it. We were eased into our course and a lot of the things we learnt in the first month were recaps of things I had done in my A Level as not everyone took the A Level so there needed to be a way to get everyone onto a level playing field so I found this helped me to ease in.

With the workload, I thought it was okay and I managed it well. I actually think that because I had had two years out I was more ready to work and learn as I think I would've felt quite burnt out going straight into uni after my A Levels as I was so exhausted from doing them so I was in a better headspace to learn after having time out.

In terms of preparing, reading over notes you have from college/sixth form would be a good place to start. In all honestly I didn't do much preparation before I went which actually was fine as they don't expect you to. If they did want you to do certain things they will tell you in advance so you can get it done over the summer.I would say more thinking about the routine of it, budgeting while at uni, cooking (if you are living in halls) are more important things to think about and focus on rather than the actual work and studying!

I hope some of this helps.
