Is my profile ok for a MSc in Mathematical Sciences

Hi everyone,

I'm a last-year CS student from a top university in Spain. Throughout my degree, I realised that math is what I enjoy the most. That's why I'd like to study a master in mathematics next.

The most interesting one was OMMS but, I'm unsure whether I am a good fit for it. I have an average grade of 83% but in math classes, I average 89% and have received honors. Also, I enjoy self-studying math. I've read and solved the problem sets from classic books like Complex Analysis (Snider's Fundamentals of Complex Analisys), Partial Differential Equations Peter J Olver, Elementary Number Theory and Stewart's Calculus. Currently I'm working through Understanding Analysis, Introduction to Topology and Contemporary Abstract Algebra whenever I have time.

I love both applied math (PDEs, modelling) and discrete math (combinatorics, number theory, graph theory). I’m considering applying to Oxford’s OMMS because it offers a broad mix of pure and applied mathematics. Based on this, do I seem competitive or should I look for other masters? Which one would you recommend?

Hi,

I am a third year maths student at Lancaster University and I was also considering a Masters. I think the main things to consider are the criteria for the course at the universities you are looking at. Some universities require you to have an undergraduate degree in Mathematics whereas some only require a degree in a similar field.
I would also recommend looking at the modules in each course and to see if you have the foundational knowledge for those modules. The other thing to note is that some universities offer masters in specific areas of mathematics. For example, Lancaster offer a masters in Data Science.
Finally, I would also recommend looking at other courses and applying for more than one as this means you can keep your options open.

You definitely seem like you have a love for Maths so good luck!
