Cambridge Trinity for Maths

Is it true that Trinity College(talking specifically maths) only take like BMO top scorers or IMO Participants. Why do people encourage others not to apply there so much even if that student is very able?

It's true that trinity is very competitive for maths, and if you apply you will be up against a lot of those Olympiad competitors. That doesn't make it impossible (for example, a guy from my school got an offer with only a low score in bmo round 1) but it does make it pretty difficult, and lots of people would prefer to just pick somewhere less competitive.

More on that person from your school. Did he like just do very well on STEP or good A levels?

He hasn't taken STEP yet, he's sitting it this summer. As for his predicted grades, I think he has A*A*A, with an achieved A* in maths. Not entirely sure, it might be 4A*. In general he just has a pretty good intuition for maths - he and I both took our maths a level a year early, that's the only reason I know anything about him lol.

Ohh alright I really though people needed like an IMO or top BMO scorer rank but i guess it would help in the application process though. Also, is the UKMT IMC and SMC actually worths studying for the olympiad rounds

Probably not, since the question styles are so different. But then again, SMC is a prerequisite for BMO so Olympiad students should already have some UKMT experience I guess?

I don't think it is true. It is mainly decided by the interview. BMO top scorers or IMO participants are probably just a good indicators of their maths standard.

One consideration is that Trinity isn't inherently better than any other college. All colleges teach the same content and the differences are primarily residential and pastoral so for many students Trinity isn't the best option. I preferred a smaller college when I applied and it was a much better fit.

Trinity does seem to have a preference for Olympiad competitors, especially for international students, but it is not a requirement nor does Olympiad success mean a student is going to be any better at the Maths Tripos.
