Second degree funding options

Hi good afternoon,

I started university in 2015 but only completed 2 years due to extenuating circumstances. I was given a pass degree/ordinary degree in Electrical Engineering. I want to go back to University again and complete a Computer Science degree. My a levels were A*A*A. Just not totally sure whether i can get funding for the full-time degree. Would it be feasible since i only an ordinary degree and the Computer Science degree could be seen as a top up to Honors though in a different but related field?

All help is appreciated, thank you!

Hi there,

We normally don't fund second degrees unless its one of our exception courses. If you confirm the course and university you wish to study, and how long the course will be, we can check this on the systems for you.

Thanks,
Claire

Hi Claire thanks for you response!

So i was looking at the following courses:
UCAS course code
Imperial
GG02

UCAS course code
UCL
G400

UCAS code:
Oxford
G400

UCAS code
Cambridge
G400

Would there be any possibilities of full funding or even just partial funding?
Thank you so much for your help Claire!

Hi RocketReach,

You would be eligible to apply for a top up to an honours however, your previous study would be taken into account that could affect the Tuition Fee Loan. For example, if you were to study a 3 year course, the calculation would be 3+1-2= 2 years of full support left. This means that you would need to self fund year 1 of the course as you would only be eligible to apply for the Maintenance Loan and any supplementary grants. If you were to study the course part time, you would be eligible for full support including the Tuition Fee Loan as Computer Science is an exception to previous study and equal level qualification rules if studied part time.

Thanks, Clare

Hi thanks Clare for the information,

Just a quick question, would the circumstances change for full-time funding if i were to take an integrated Masters which is said to be a level 7 qualification? Since it would be higher than the qualification that i currently hold?

Thanks for your efforts Clare!

Hi RocketReach,

Yes, if a student gains an ordinary degree or lower level qualification from completion of a course they can be eligible for support for an integrated masters, subject to the previous study calculation or end on/top up calculation if applicable. So it would still be the same calculation as previously mentioned. It would be course length +1 additional year- previous study years = entitlement.

Thanks, Clare

Thanks Clare,

And final questions, I believe I took additional years of funding to complete the ordinary degree. Would SFE have any willingness to remove the previous years of study to allow full funding if evidence can be provided to show medical records of illness at the time of study?
And given there are years of study to be funded by myself, would these years still be eligible for just the maintenance loan rather than both the tuition and maintenance loan?

Thanks Clare!

Hi RocketReach,

Yes, you can provide evidence of Compelling Personal Reasons from a 3rd party professional that confirms what happened, when this happened and how this impacted your studies.

Thanks, Clare

Hi Clare,

How would i present the evidence for my illness at the time? Are there any forms which can be submitted along with the SFE applications?

Thanks again

Hi there. When you submit your applicaiton, you would upload your evidence to your online account.

More information here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/going-back-to-uni-or-repeating-a-year

For example, we can accept photocopies of the following;

-Letter from a GP on headed paper
-Letter from University on headed paper
-Letter from Social Services on headed paper
-Letter from clergy or professional person on headed paper
-Death Certificate and/or a Birth Certificate

The evidence must be;

- Signed and dated
-Confirms the reason why you could not continue with your studies, how your condition impacted your ability to study and
- When this took place

You will also need to send this with a letter from yourself explaining what has happened, in your own words.

Thanks, Leah.
