Newcastle dentistry rejection

My daughter has been rejected from Newcastle University today for dentistry which means she's been rejected to all four and her dream of becoming a dentist is over. She could apply again next year but i think she's come to the fact that she just wants to get on with things and not take a gap year, especially given the chance of her getting in next year is going to be the same. I feel so sad for her, and she put in so much effort to try and get there.

She has decided to go ahead with Chemsitry instead and has been able to apply at the unis she was rejected for dentistry. Does anyone know if Newcastle will give her that option to apply for another subject?

Yes she's been accepted for her 5th option, this is for Chemistry at the uni of Sheffield. Sheffield is our home town so she's looking at what other options she has as she wants to move away. Bristol and London Queen Mary both allowed her to change her course to Chemistry so she has other options but she really loved Newcastle when we went to visit so was hoping they'd allow her to change to Chemistry too. She is partners too. Thanks

I’m not sure! Maybe it might be worth giving them a ring? I also heard Bristol is great for chemistry.

Thank you. Yes Bristol is a good option, trying to weigh up her options and costs etc. Train travel to Bristol from Sheffield is super expensive and I think she'll want to travel back quite often (boyfriend will be at sheff uni).

Universities on the phone are also pretty helpful normally. See what they say!

im so sorry to hear that, was she rejected pre or post interview? also i just wanted to say that im on a gap year and it does tend to be easier the second time as it isnt ur first rodeo, so she could be more likely to get an offer. i was in her shoes last year so it could help if u let her know that but even if she does choose to do chemistry, if it makes her happy thats all that matters

I’m so sorry to hear that. I know how competitive dentistry can be and it’s such a shame, honestly. The same thing happened to someone I know and she took the chemistry route too.

I don’t see why Newcastle wouldn’t agree to apply for another subject, but definitely get in touch.

I know it can be a risky game to play, but always keep clearing in mind because it is possible to get something better/offers an opportunity if she changes her mind.

It comes down to which is more important I suppose, dentistry or Newcastle. If she was to reject the offer for chemistry at Sheffield she could apply to UCAS extra and apply for dentistry at different places, and keep trying until she got in somewhere, so that is an option. However, of course if Newcastle is more important, chemistry is an amazing option too .

Best of luck!

Hi @Lafowler1982

I'm afraid if your daughter wanted to apply to another course at Newcastle University she would need to apply through UCAS Extra which opens on the 26th February 2026.

At this stage we can't predict which courses will be available in UCAS Extra. We can advise that applications received by the UCAS equal consideration deadline on the 14th January 2026 will be considered first, and applications received after will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis while there are places remaining on the course. As such, a course can close at any time.

I am really sorry to hear that for ur daughter. It is such a tough, demoralising process. I have a friend who is studying Chemistry at Bristol and loves it, if that's any help. But I put a silly 5th choice which is equally hard to get into so am resigned to the possibility of having a gap year as I don't really want to do anything else. I should have put Chem as my back up but maybe for the best as then I might be tempted to do it too when I really feel I should give dent another try as was told to think of it as a two year application process as sooo many excellent candidates dont/cant get in the first time round simply bcos of numbers. All depends on A level results I spose but if ur daughter does really well in her A levels maybe she should reconsider as her application will probably be much stronger second time around and with A levels in hand. Just a thought. Wouldn't close any doors yet.

Just wanted to say my husband had the same thing happen with Newcastle Uni he ended up doing a chemistry degree there and eventually did get onto do dentistry it did mean he had to do 8 years in total for uni with the extra dental foundation year taking him to 9 years in total but he's now doing what he loves. It is a lot of years study but not impossible ifnits what she really wants to do.
