Warwick maths difficulty?

I have an offer for maths at Warwick, for grades A*B. I got a contextual offer so I didn't need to sit the TMUA or the STEP but the vast majority of people would have, and I haven't done prep for either of those exams. Will I be disadvantaged if everyone has done TMUA and STEP prep and I haven't?

Congrats on the offer!!

Nah you should be fine. TMUA content is almost identical to the A level spec, just with more challenging questions, but you can get that kind of practice elsewhere so no problem there. As for STEP, afaik it's not standard for Warwick? I don't know anyone with an offer who prepped for STEP, personally I stopped as soon as the Cambridge rejection came through.

So yeah, you should be fine on both fronts, though I'd recommend doing some occasional work with TMUA/STEP style problems just to get a good feel for that kind of stuff.

Okay thats really helpful. I believe they give STEP offers with A-levels if you haven't sat the TMUA (and you're not contextual) but I assume they're not that common.
Thank you!

No.
The degree is designed for people who haven't done either so it does go from the basics, and even if you are disadvantaged at the start, it will cover so much more ground that a tiny head start doesn't matter.

If you want a specific breakdown of the 9 compulsory modules in a Warwick first year, 5 of them (foundations, algebra 1&2, and analysis 1&2) are mostly independent of anything pre-undergrads are expected to know.
Modelling 1&2 are broadly differential equation and integration-based, but that foundation is all contained in FM.
Intro to probability has essentially no overlap with TMUA or STEP.
There's a programming module too (which has a long name I've forgotten), but it is obvs not related either.

It can't hurt to do TMUA or STEP stuff if you feel like it, but their contents aren't specifically useful.
The most important thing you could learn which your A-levels won't teach you is how to write proofs (because this is essentially what a maths degree is) and sort of ideas about rigour and logic.
Obviously, they do not expect you to know this, so it will be taught in great detail at the start of the first term, but it is useful.
Quite a small thing, but maybe also eigenvalues and eigenvectors? The lecturer has changed (and is apparently much better), but when I did modelling 1 they were just thrown in assuming that everyone was aware of how they worked and I was not. (Although if you do Edexcel FP2 then they'll be covered there I think...)

Honestly, you don’t need to stress too much. When you start at Warwick, there’s usually a refresher at the beginning that goes over the A-level maths you’re expected to know. It helps everyone settle in and makes sure you’re not missing key basics.

TMUA and STEP prep doesn’t mean people already know the whole course, it’s mostly exam style practice. Once term starts, everyone is adjusting to uni maths anyway.

The jump can feel big at first, but that’s normal. The refresher and first year modules are there to get everyone onto the same page.
