clarification on SFE funding (going from full time to part time)

hi !! so TLDR: i rushed into uni not really knowing what i wanted to do and kinda wasted two years (didn’t even technically pass second year either lmao)

ive only recently realised what it is i want to do for a career/degree (animal studies/zoology) but i know that with full time it would mean having to self fund the first year which, considering i don’t have a spare (almost) 10 grand in my back pocket, isn’t feasible 😭

i’ve been looking around and i saw a post about part time funding not being affected by full time as long as you don’t hold a qualification ?

so ig i just wanted to clarify that if i applied for a part time course (which would be better for me anyway as i don’t really want to reduce my hours at work all that much) would i be able to get the FULL funding for it ?? idk this might be simple but i dont want to go getting my hopes up yk ?

appreciate any advice, thanks !

Hi Gwuck,

If you study part time, you would be eligible for support as you do not hold an equal level qualification. If you study full time, your previous study is taken into account which can affect the Tuition Fee Loan. For example, if you were to study a new 3 year full time course and have 2 years previous study, the calculation would be 3+1-2= 2 years full support. That means you would need to self fund the Tuition Fee Loan in year 1 as you would only receive the Maintenance Loan and any supplementary grants in the first year and full support in years 2 and 3.

Thanks, Clare
