A-level English lit revision tips

What is the best way to revise for English literature?

Reply 1

Hi. Whilst I'm not studying A-Level English lit, I am studying the Scottish equivalent and am predicted an A, so hopefully I can give you some general advice that might help.

Firstly, I found this video by a YouTuber called Jeta on how she got an A* in A-Level English lit really helpful and in-depth. I recommend checking it out.

Then, in terms of memorising quotes, I like to create revision guides. These serve the same purpose as flashcards, but are less tedious to make.

I like to create a table for each key theme/character that could come up in the exam, with quotes, analysis, and evaluation columns. For each key theme within a text, I like to pick at least eight quotes from throughout the text (however depending on your text you may do upwards of ten quotes). The analysis I do for each quote is on the quote itself, whereas the evaluation ties the quote to the wider text/portrayal of the theme or character.

Once I'm finished making a revision sheet, I print it off and read over like I would do with flashcards. I typically like to do this at least once a day for two weeks in the lead up to a test/mocks, and every now and again the rest of the time.

I also find making mindmaps for each character and key theme to be really useful.

I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask me. 😊

Hi, I would say revise english literature by summarizing key texts and themes, making character and theme notes, memorizing key quotes and practicing times essays using past paper questions, while linking analysis to context.
