Undergraduate ChemEng with a completely unrelated personal statement

Hello,

I have submitted my UCAS application using all 5 options (which were 3 medicine and 2 pharmacy) but I only got 1 offer, and I'm happy to decline this offer to apply for chemical engineering using UCAS extra.

I have the minimum grades for A-levels and GCSEs for most universities. But I'm worried about the personal statement, since mine was tailored to medicine.

Would all universities require a separate personal statement tailored for ChemEng? And are there any universities (apart from Cambridge and Oxford ) which require interviews?

If you have any advice, I would be very grateful.

Hi Anon,

Some unis will accept an alternative PS for Chem Eng but this varies and you'd have to ask them if this would be acceptable.

If you've already looked into a few Chem Eng courses and are happy that you meet the requirements then you're free to use UCAS Extra or Clearing to find a place. However, you always have the option to take a year out and apply for Chem Eng at 5 places next cycle if you'd rather give yourself more choice and have more time to go to open days, hear course presentations, find the right course for you etc.

As for interviews, its mainly Oxbridge who interview, however ICL do as well particularly for STEM courses, and UCL also do for some competitive courses. Certain courses also interview such as Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry and Social Work. Here at Bath we may also interview you if you have come from a non-traditional educational background but most people are not interviewed and interviewing for Chem Eng is not standard for us - other unis may be different!

Hoping some of this helps, best of luck 🙂
