Year abroad in America

Hi, I have offers from Durham and Edinburgh to do psychology and philosophy (both without year abroad)

I really would like to do a year abroad, and North America is currently my number one choice.

The issue is cost: I believe my student loan would still be active so I would have ~£9000 for the academic year, however studying in North America can cost upwards of £20000.

I’ve looked and I don’t qualify for any of the Edinburgh or Durham funding (Turing fund), but my parents also wouldn’t be able to afford paying for me.

Does anyone have any information on scholarships or funding for international students? perhaps a college specific fund or something.

Additionally, I’ve considered studying somewhere in Europe, but I only speak English, so that’s kind of not an option.

Hi there,

I study Psychology here at Durham, if there's anything you'd like to know about the course. 🙂 It seems you're in a tricky situation, so I'll try to send over some helpful information.

Using this link, you can see the international scholarships Durham University offers: https://www.durham.ac.uk/study/scholarships/international/.

There is also 'Go Funding, Fees and Finance' - Funding is available to support many GO Durham placements. The funding available may depend on the activity undertaken, the location of the activity and your circumstances. You can read more about this here: https://www.durham.ac.uk/global-durham/global-opportunities/go-funding/.

There are college specific scholarships, though these differ largely depending on which college you're in - you could take a look at these online once you receive your allocation. Just as an example, you can see college-specific scholarships here for:

I hope this has given you some helpful pointers, please let me know if you have any questions. ☺️
