The film isn’t presenting her as a role model it’s exaggerating the chaos of teenage insecurity for comedy. Most of us didn’t watch it and think “yes, this is how I should behave,” we watched it and thought “oh my god that’s painfully relatable.” It showed awkward girlhood without turning it into something polished or hyper mature. Is it dated in places? Definitely. But saying it did more harm than good gives it way too much power it was a goofy coming of age movie, not a manifesto on how to live.

you have a point there, however i will offer a slight rebuttal - the films you watch, even when you're 14/15, can still have an influence, to whatever extent, on your thinking and the way you view the world. the film seems to normalise quite a few slightly problematic issues like stalking boys with binoculars and peeking at a girl undressing in her room, which, while a normal teenager can absolutely identify as things that one should never do, they can still have an impact on more impressionable girls. normalising a problem and then not addressing it can come across as presenting it as acceptable even when it's not. hope this makes sense.
