heyy my name is iris and this is my gyg!! this is going to be my academic diary so i'll normally post super long paragraphs abt what went on in my day. my main goal out of this is to motivate myself to revise and get the best grades possible. I'm currently getting good grades, but I want to be aiming higher. I want to aim for all 9's, which i think is achieveable with enough revision. I'm planning to apply for Oxford, as it's my current motivation. I haven't yet decided on a sixth form, but i want it to be inside of a secondary skl, not a sixth form collage.

heyy, um this is my first post on TSR. I'm not expecting anyone to reply, but I'm always open to suggestions and tips!! I made this account purely for a gyg (grow your grades). I'll try to post weekly on her and update on how my revising has been going, as well as test scores. I guess this is kind of like an academic diary lol.
Right now it is the half-term, and I'm revising daily consistently. I've currently revised for maths, physics and chem by doing flashcards and answering practice questions (these papers take ~2 hours to complete). Forest has helped me to retain concentration, and I've gotten a grade 7+ on both papers that I did. It's not terrible considering it's the middle of year 10, but I had higher expectations for myself.
If anyone wants to answer questions, I would like to ask what is the most effective way to write notes? Is it better to do it online or in a notebook? Handwritten or typed out? Should I use venn diagrams and concept maps or use bullet points? I made notes that I was really proud of last time but they all got deleted (I used simplenotes), so it made me unmotivated to make more as the same thing could happen again.
ok i wrote WAY too much im not expecting anyone to read this

hi, typed out might be better for your mind and soul. It depends on whats efficient for you, personally writing some key points or drawing diagrams help me best, i could help you with english revision but everything else is kinda out there for me. Oh wait i re read it and your in year 10? i could help with history and if you do business aswell

yh, i honestly find typing out easier bc i type faster than i can write. I'll take ur advice on drawing diagrams, because i always get overwhelmed seeing 50 pictures of the same thing and not knowing which one to choose, so i usually draw them out and label around it. i dont do business as one of my options, but i could totally use your help for english and history ^^ also tysm for reading that i know it was long

Tbh i think when you write notes, you have to have alot of time on your hands and a place for them to go, maybe do a little flashcards for quick fire questions but yeah typing is defo the way to go. Yeah drawing diagrams are always easier because u can kinda see the image in your head. I'll be glad to help. It wasnt long, thanks for reading my reply tho😁

i've already started making flashcards on anki, they're online so i can use them any time and on any device. i think for harder concepts that are difficult to understand, i will def be writing notes, but flashcards are such a useful way to revise. np for reading ur reply 😛

i've completely forgot to update last week bc of how busy i've been with mocks ☹️ our mocks were supposed to be within one week, but the servers were down so they couldn't print out some of the papers. i have some mocks next week because of this, so at least the tests will be spread out so i have more time to revise
this week, i've done: english lang, english lit, history
english lit was analysing london by william blake (30 marks). it was the ONLY poem i didn't revise because i assumed they would change the paper for every class, which they didn't. im a bit disapointed about that. however i managed to write a lot about the structure and context, and my teacher said that can secure us a minimum grade of 7. english lang was creative writing (thank god) and it was a snowy image, which i think i did really well in. i completely forgot that i had a history mock so i only had one day to revise. i had to do a full migration paper (52 marks). i usually run out of time in writing exams because i tend to over explain, but i had just enough time to finish it. although i didnt have time to reread my answers, i think i did ok.
next week, i have comp sci, science (bio, chem, physics) and rs mocks. my comp sci is 80 marks and each science paper is ~30 marks, so i have a lot of revision to do. i'm not too worried about rs because the content is easy and i've already done some revision on it.
i'm going to start doing updates every day to motivate myself to revise. i would post my trees on forest but i keep forgetting to do the stopwatch so i'll do some next week lol

over this weekend !!
yesterday
- 2 hours creating moodboard for art
- 1 hr 30 mins bio revision
today
- 1 hr bio revision
- 70 mins comp sci revision
total : 340 minutes
I feel like I've been more productive than normal this week (mostly bc of mocks). I could've done more on Saturday but I felt so unmotivated and I didn't want to force myself when I wouldn't retain any of the information. Whenever I wanted to give up, I js reminded myself of this one gyg I saw where the person was doing 4+ hours of revision daily 😓 wish I had that much time loll. anyways I've been pretty productive and I hope I can keep that up for the rest of the week !!

omg today was sooo fun, I did a workshop for the whole day at skl. Its called speak out and it helps you to build confidence for public speaking. Thirty ppl in my yr were picked, and I did my speech on educating young ppl abt politics. It was really interesting to hear from ppl I wouldn't normally talk to abt their passions. There was a competition aspect to it in our borough and nationally, but my skl applied too late to enter in it. Me, my friend and two other ppl were picked to represent our skl (if we went) out of who got the most points. I'm so disappointed that I'm not going to the competition, I was really looking forward to it. However, the teacher that organised it said we can still present our speeches in an assembly (no thanks). I wish I could've heard from other schools 😪 but everyone told me that they really liked my speech, and I got the most applause so that made me feel good abt myself.
Anyways I felt so unmotivated to do revision today. I only revised for 40 minutes on bio in my schools library, but my friends decided to join me today and they kept distracting me. I love them but I feel like they don't take revision seriously enough. I felt so bad not doing any work at home but i couldn't bring myself to focus. I have a bio and rs mock. Rs is relativey easy for me, but there are so many complicated topics in bio that I'm unsure abt. I hope I do well on them.

i had two mocks today: bio and rs. im so dissapointed abt my bio mock bc i was so confident beforehand. my teachers told us that every topic since the start of the year would be on the test, so i spent a lot of time going over complicated concepts that i didnt understand, just for HALF OF THE PAPER to be on the blood and heart. and then my teacher was going over a few of the questions using my paper as a reference and he basically said that i wrote the wrong things for a lot of my answers bc i misunderstood them 💔 so thats great. i have a feeling that im going to do really well on rs bc i had extra time, used two quotes for my 12 marker and remembered to use a lot of key words to get into the highest band.
ive barely done any revision today, despite having three mocks tmrw omd im so cooked (maths, comp sci, chemistry) and the first two are double lessons, and both tests are 80 marks. its too late to do revision now as it already past 9, so im going to try to wake up at 5 and sleep early.
despite that, i got my cwg (i guess it also counts as my mock grade??) for art and i got an 8!! im so proud of myself bc i really pride myself in my art coursework. it was the highest grade in my class, i got a postcard from my teacher, and the other teacher in the art department told me that she also looked at my book, and that she can tells i really love art which was such a sweet compliment :h: oh yeah i also did revision in my school library for abt forty minutes on chemistry, but i wasnt all that focused so it doesnt really count

I woke up at 6 today and spent an hour revising in the morning bc I had three mocks. I didn't revise for maths tho bc its my strong suit, so I focused on my weaker subjects (comp sci and chem) and did interactive questions on gizmo and cognito. I talked to my friend and everyone else got 16 and I got 64 bc I forgot to divide by four, so I think I'll only lose two marks max on that paper. I revised the exact past paper we got for comp sci but I only did half of it bc I felt too lazy to write the longer questions 😭 thankfully o remembered the mark scheme for the first few questions. Both these tests were out of 80, but I'm much less confident on computer science. Last period I had a chem test which went relatively well. I've been learning topics that weren't even remotely close to what was on the paper and way more complex concepts. Thankfully I've done similar questions before so I knew how to answer them. I think I'll only lose marks for missing out keywords and mixing up electrostatic and intermolecular forces.
On Wednesdays, I have art intervention after skl for an hour to catch up on our coursework. I love it bc my friends from the other class can join us so my whole friend group is there, its so fun. Today my art teacher let us stay for 90 minutes which was really nice. A lot of ppl complimented my artwork and I had conversations with my friends. I was supposed to catch up on my coursework at home but I ended up scrolling on tiktok (I have to delete it soon I waste so much time there). Dont have any mocks tmrw thankfully, but I have an rs and physics mock on Friday 😓 I hope they're not too hard.

thank uu 😅 my last art project that i've finished was on movement. My final piece was an a3 acrylic painting of a collage of my face. Right now, the theme is flora, so we have to bring in a plant/fruit and draw it in any medium. We have to fill as many pages as we can until the next half-term, when we get to choose our theme. I don't think this project has a final piece, its just a filler project until the end of term

today was my last day of mocks !!!  mocks honestly made me so stressed bc half of the tests that i revisied for had content that we've never learnt before, so i js hope that i get min. grade 6 on all of them. i had a physics mock today that wasn't too bad, the equations seemed slightly confusing but that was only because there were a lot of values and i had to rearrange the equation. i was supposed to sit the rs mock that i missed on monday bc of the speak out workshop but i was too scared to ask so i guess im doing it on monday lol.
we had to bring in a plant/fruit for art today, and i brought a mango bc i thought the colours looked nice, but it made my bag sooo heavy :ashamed2: it's the first time ive actually finished a drawing within a double lesson, i usually take way longer. i drew it in oil pastel bc we're supposed to test out different mediums and i really liked working with it !!
my parents asked me come straight home today instead of going library so i did my hw and ended up finishing all of it within 80 minutes !! considering i had like 5 different assignments, im proud of myself for not leaving it for the last minute. i think ill continue unfinished pages in my sketchbook for abt an hour today and continue tmrw morning.

ok so I managed to complete all the annotations in my art book (bar one) and started working on a new title. I was working on it the whole day and logged 415 minutes on forest, which is almost 7 hours so I'm super proud of myself.
During my breaks, I was looking into competitions I can do to put on my CV, but couldn't find any free ones. I might ask my parents but I doubt they would let me. I really want to go further in certain subjects by writing essays and researching in my free time, specifically on debating, maths and politics.
Tmrw I'm going to try and finish the last annotation, write annotations in my poetry anthology and maybe try out a further maths GCSE paper to test myself. I also started watching la la land today and I have to say that its so good !! I just love the colour grading 🙌
