The Student Room Group

Independent status

Dear student finance,

I will have worked and fully supported myself for 3 consecutive years prior to my degree beginning in September.

2.5 full time years and 11months for part time as I was finishing my previous degree.

I have payslips to evidence all of this and I have no financial support from anyone but myself. My mother also refuses to provide evidence for my student finance application and I do not have contact with my father therefore if not assessed as independent I automatically would get the minimum loan despite fully supporting myself for these past 3 years. I will also need to support myself through this graduate medical degree as well and plan to do so through work.

Please may you advise on this, could I be assessed as independent?

Hi there. Yes, if you have been supporting yourself financially for 3 years prior to the beginning of your course, then you can apply as an independent student. We can't determine eligibility until you have applied and your evidence has been reviewed. When does your course start? Thanks, Leah.

Hi Leah, thank you for your response. That’s great. I start at the end of September for Graduate Entry Medicine.

Hi there, as previously advised, you can bee assessed as an independent student, however for Graduate Entry Medicine courses:

Students in year 1 of these courses must self-fund the first £3,571 of the total fee charged by the university
Student Finance England can award a tuition fee loan of up to £5,964 and a full Maintenance Loan.

for students studying Years 2-4 of these courses will be entitled to a tuition fee loan of up to £5,707 and NHS England will pay up to £3,828 of the student’s fees.
Student Finance England will only award a Reduced Rate Maintenance Loan only.
