Advanced higher biology or crash higher chem??

Hi i’m currently in S5 and am picking my options for S6, i wish to study law at university (or something literacy focused) - i am definitely picking advanced english higher history and higher modern studies but for my last option i don’t know if i should continue studying biology at advanced higher or crash chemistry. What would be more useful for my future career prospects? Thanks in advance!

I couldn't tell you whats more useful as I'm not applying for law, but as someone studying higher chemistry I can tell you that its definitely possible to crash it. Nat 5 knowledge does pass onto higher, but honestly a lot of it is brand new content, there isn't really much Nat 5 knowledge that is built on apart from maybe some of Unit 2.
Also, i don't think its wise to study an advanced higher that isn't related or necessary to what you want to do at university. It'll just be unnecessary stress for you.

Hi,

For Law or a literacy-focused degree, neither Advanced Higher Biology nor Higher Chemistry will directly strengthen your application in the way your essay subjects will. Universities care far more about strong performance in subjects like English, History and Modern Studies for Law.

Given that, the key question becomes where you are most likely to achieve the strongest grade. If you are already doing well in Biology and feel confident, continuing to Advanced Higher Biology may be the safer choice. Advanced Highers can demonstrate academic stretch and depth, which universities value, even if the subject is not directly related to Law.

Crash Higher Chemistry would only make sense if you are confident you could achieve a very strong grade in it. It does not offer any particular advantage for Law admissions. A lower grade in a new subject would be more damaging than continuing in a subject where you already have momentum.

For Law, universities are mainly looking for strong analytical ability, essay writing skills, and academic consistency. Your combination of Advanced Higher English, Higher History and Higher Modern Studies already aligns very well with that. So realistically, choose the subject where you are most likely to perform best and enjoy the workload.

For Law, grade strength matters much more than whether it is Biology or Chemistry.

Thanks for such a prompt reply. I understand neither will particularly strengthen or improve my law application. I just need to pick one due to my school’s rules on picking four subjects in S6. I think I would achieve a better grade in biology than I would in chemistry, leaving me to most likely pursue that.

Unless I do a YASS module in law at level 7, which I’m not sure is a good idea to replace a subject with, as it’s not an official SQA qualification and instead an Open University module. One of my teachers also advised against those courses, as she said that more people drop them over actually passing them.

Are these courses valued the same as a more traditional advanced higher?

okay you're a literacy person but i am a science person. i do higher chem and i am in s5 higher chem is more toward stem and its easier in my opinion. don't study advanced higher biology because it will deviate more from Literacy course like law and you will be more towards stem side. give me all your higher subject and then i can tell you which is ideal.
My conclusive analysis is dont do any science subjects at advanced higher if you want to study law- do french spanish, politic etc.
Final conclusion, crash advanced higher modern study instead of higher modern study. Crashing advanced higher modern study should be okay since you have a strong literacy background. if that is not possible then do another advanced higher that's 90% completely non stem if youre aiming to get a competetive advantage in studying law.

I think you should stick with bio as youre more confident that youll get a good grade and crashing a subject that youre not that keen on seems like extra work that could drag your grades down
