Medicine as a second degree (non-GEM)

Hello,

For context, I already have a BSc undergraduate degree which I received student finance for.

I have now accepted an offer to go back to university to study Medicine (Keele), unfortunately I was not successful in gaining an offer for any GEM routes so I will doing Keele's standard 5 year undergrad medicine degree.

If my understanding is correct, I will not be entitled to any tuition fee loan (at least for the first 4 years) but since it's a medicine degree I will be entitled to apply for a maintenance loan for each of the 5 years?

If that is true, I'm confused how I would means assess myself (34 yo living in my own house) as I am currently employed and so if I am means tested it will be taking into account my salary, but obviously when I start uni I will no longer have a job or a salary and my means will be significantly different.

There is very patchy and inconsistent advice on the gov and student finance websites for this scenario and the maintenance calculators do not have an option for returning students who already hold a degree.

Any help is much appreciated!

Kate

Hi Kate,

For students who apply for an undergraduate medicine course (non-GEM) who have already studied before:

Years 1-4

Students can receive the usual package of support available to undergraduates in their first 4 years of study. However, this is subject to normal previous study rules.

‘4’ will be used as the ordinary duration of a new Medicine course in the previous study calculation*. This is because standard entitlement is not applied to any years of the course where the student is eligible to apply for an NHS bursary.

In the 5th year and any subsequent years of their course students are entitled to an income-assessed NHS bursary and, therefore, we award them the reduced rate of maintenance loan only.

Previous Study Calculation Example*

Medicine course (in years): 4 years
+
Additional Year (for resits if required): 1 year
-
Previous course studied (in years): ( ? years)
=
So (4+1-?= X) years remaining entitlement.

Additional Info: Bursary/Scholarships

Students may also be eligible for a bursary/scholarships from their university. Students in the 5th or subsequent years of their course can request a means tested assessment for bursary purposes, despite only being entitled to the reduced rate of maintenance loan.

Thanks Stephen.

I'm still not quite clear. I was under the impression from the limited info online that I could still apply for maintenance loan from student finance England for years 1-4 regardless of any previous maintenance loan issued for my previous degree as medicine is an exception. Could you link me where this information is clarified?

l claimed maintenance loan for 3 out of the 4 years of my previous degree (as I had a placement year in year 3 where I did not need the maintenance).

So that would mean I can only receive a maintenance loan for 2 years in my new 5 year degree according to the calculation? (Plus NHS funding for year 5)

As per my second question, how would I be means assessed for this given I am currently employed but will be unemployed when I start in September (i.e. my means based assessment will significantly change).

Many thanks

Kate

Hi Kate,

In the first 4 years you'll be entitled to a means-tested Maintenance Loan: this means it's based on the household income (we don't count your own earned income).

For example, can you please tell us if you're over 25? If so, are you currently living with a partner?

Tanks, Graeme

Great thanks Graeme, so just to confirm I can still apply for and receive this maintenance loan each of the 4 years of my new medicine degree, even though I have previously received maintenance loan (3 years worth) for my first degree?

I am over 25 and living alone.

I assume the means assessment based on the tax year prior to starting uni? So if i'm starting in September it'll be taxi year April 2025-april 2026?

Many thanks

Yes, that's right - you'll be entitled to a Maintenance Loan in all years because Medicine is an exception course. In the 5th Year you'll receive a reduced rate Maintenance Loan because you should be entitled to an NHS Bursary.

Since you're over 25 and single you'll be entitled to the maximum Maintenance Loan: we don't take your own earned income into account at all.

Thanks, Graeme
