Mature student pursuing ODP

Any advice for a mature student returning to university to train to be an ODP, changing career from veterinary nursing.
Has anyone done similar?
Any current students or graduates able to offer advice?
Thank you ☺️

Totally doable vet nursing gives you a lot of transferable skills for ODP (patient care, asepsis/infection control, theatre-style workflow, calm under pressure, teamwork, communication).
A few practical tips:
Get some theatre/ODP shadowing if you can (even a day) so you can talk about scrub/anaesthetics/recovery and why ODP specifically.
In your statement/interview, give clear examples: sterile technique, monitoring, responding to emergencies, explaining procedures to anxious owners/patients (communication), and safeguarding/professional boundaries.
Be ready for the reality: placements + shift patterns are demanding, so plan childcare/finances early.
If you’re looking at Canterbury Christ Church University, mature students are really common on healthcare courses, and support is strong; you won’t be the only career-changer. You can visit our course page for OPD on this link - Operating Department Practice - Canterbury Christ Church University
