Uni Choices - Firm and Insurance

York vs Sheffield vs Liverpool for Law student opinions needed!
Post:
Hi everyone!
I’ve applied for Law and have narrowed my choices down to University of York, University of Sheffield, and University of Liverpool (AAA for all). I live just outside the UK and have visited all three, but I haven’t seen the subject-specific facilities for Sheffield or Liverpool, so I’d really appreciate current students’ opinions.
I’ve already done a lot of research on rankings, modules, etc., so I’m mainly looking for real student experiences rather than prospectus answers.
Some things I’d love to hear about:
How much the university actually invests in students (resources, teaching quality, support, facilities)
Law course content flexibility, optional modules, how engaging it is
Opportunities within the course (placements, internships, careers support, study abroad I know Liverpool offers this, but how good is it in practice?)
Societies and extracurriculars especially things like netball, dance, and musical theatre, not just law/debate
Accommodation and campus life - price, is it uni owned or independent - such as liverpool sharing with LJMU and LHU
Nightlife and social scene - general awareness of this so far
Graduate prospects and how supportive careers services are - when I went to visit York they said they have advisors for each subject?
Overall student satisfaction and whether you’d choose the uni again
I’m particularly interested in York’s PBL-style teaching, so I’d love to know how that actually works in practice too.
I know quite a lot academically, so I’m really just trying to get honest opinions and gauge more of an insight into each uni from current or former students in order to help me decide my firm and insurance. (University and student life is what you make it, is likely going to differ from person to person and be subjective, others will have their own opinions, I understand in a way I cannot be completely influenced by others etc) Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hi pinklemonpiggy,

We're super pleased to hear you have visited our campus - we hope you liked what you saw?

We'll try our best to help with some of those questions you write (with the help of our students), too...

Law course content flexibility, optional modules, how engaging it is; Opportunities within the course (placements, internships, careers support, study abroad; York’s PBL-style teaching and how that actually works in practice too : check out what Shreya says are the best things about studying Law at York and Hope's take on PBL.

Societies and extracurriculars: some of our societies are featured in this video! We've also got an A - Z list of societies here.

I hope this provides some food for thought for now as you think about your final decisions!

Let us know if we can help with anything else!

Hi pinklemonpiggy, 👋

They are all great options and I'm sure you would be happy at any of them! 😀

I can't speak for the law course at Sheffield specifically, but if you did want to speak to a current Sheffield Law student about the course content specifically and the teaching etc, you can do so here!

In terms of being a student in Sheffield, I would say it's a really great place to be! I fell in love with the uni at undergrad so came back for my MA and PHD. The university buildings are all fairly close together and the cafes are amazing and really good value. The libraries are really great spaces and, from what I can tell, the Law course has some great opportunities to do pro bono schemes and an optional placement year. 😃

The SU also has over 300 societies and over 50 sports clubs to join so there are so many options to choose from. There's the Dance society but also some specific dance societies like Latin and ballroom, Swing, K-Pop and Irish dance. There's also SUPAS, Sheffield University Performing Arts Society. As well as a Netball club. The societies are such a great way to meet new people and explore a new or existing interest. I joined the Stitch society and met some great people and also learned some new skills, like altering clothes. 🧵

The social scene is great in Sheffield. Whether you like the browse the vintage shops and independent cafes, or go out on a night for a dance, there's so many options. The SU also does different themed nightclub events at the Foundry so a great start to the night (my personal fave is Pop Tarts). 🎤

I stayed in uni accom for the entirety of my undergrad because I loved it. It was in such a great area and was a really great chance to meet new people studying different subjects. Endcliffe is the accom I stayed in and I loved that it was so close to the local shops and cafes and the Botanical Gardens. You can also choose to stay in City accom which is a bit closer to the uni buildings, and more central to the social scene of Sheffield. 🎶

I hope this helps! Please so ask if you have anymore questions as I'd be more than happy to help.

Best wishes,
Phoebe 😀
