Birmingham vs Glasgow for neuroscience + nightlife?

I have offers from Birmingham (BSc Human Neuroscience, AAA, not accredited) and Glasgow (BSc Neuroscience, ABB, accredited, longer course). I love serious nightlife (I'm from Nairobi, Kenya) and want to hear what people think about the vibe, course reputation, and if accreditation matters for neuroscience. Any advice? 🎉🧠

Hiya,

I can't really speak for birmingham but ik a little bit about Glasgow nighlife. Its pretty decent (its defo not the best) but it is a main scottish city so there is always lots to do. There are alot of pubs but the clubs itself can be a bit of a hit or miss, especially as you progress through your years as alot of the people are 18 yrs old (i.e Manuka) so alot of the clubs cater towards a social media type vibe. But whatever uni you go to u will find places and what days to go out (weekends are pretty dead)

Hi there!

I thought I might offer some insight about Glasgow as someone who has been at the University of Glasgow for almost 5 years now.

The nightlife here is a big part of the student experience. We have two student unions (Glasgow University Union and Queen Margaret Union) who both have tons of stuff on all year and regular gigs/socials every week. For example, GUU run a weekly Sports Wednesday for all sports club members. GUU is also home to the student club Hive which is very popular. Thursday is also another prominent student night out at the GUU. QMU often have great bands perform and some really cool gigs to check out (Queen, Nirvana, and The Smiths are some big names that have performed live here in the past). They also go all out for the big holidays like St. Paddy's Day, for example. If you are interested, both unions are on Instagram, but here are their websites:

Outside of student unions, we have over 300 clubs and societies. Most societies do socials and you can always find somewhere that you fit in! Some are more nightlife-oriented such as sports clubs or more social clubs and will have some great deals with local pubs/clubs as part of their membership. Socials are pretty frequent and often you can tag along with a friend without being a club member. It's a great way to try something new! Here are all the affiliated clubs if you are interested: https://www.glasgowunisrc.org/clubs-socs/

In general, Glasgow has a pretty great nightlife vibe, and in the West End (which is more student-y) you will find that Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are quite busy and buzzing. Lots of bars have student discounts as well!

Briefly on course reputation, Glasgow has a great Neuroscience course with lots of flexibility. The neuroscience department has a fantastic range of modules and courses. You will also have the opportunity to learn alongside students not doing the same degree as you - which is quite valuable. Accreditation becomes important in some contexts, such as jobs that require accredited degrees. It might be worth researching what you would like to do in your career and whether accreditation matters in that context.

Good luck with everything and all the best 😊

Best
