DMU HLS facilities

Hi everyone 👋

I’m a Health and Life Sciences student at De Montfort University and wanted to ask about / share thoughts on the facilities in the Hawthorn Building, which is the main building for HLS courses.

The Hawthorn Building has a lot of specialist teaching spaces, including:
Clinical skills and simulation labs that replicate real healthcare settings, including a hospital ward for nursing students that blew my mind!
Science labs (e.g. biomedical, forensic and pharmacy-related labs)
Psychology computer suites and practical teaching rooms
Rooms used for OSCE-style practical assessments and communication skills practice
Lecture theatres, seminar rooms and group study areas
Lockers for HLS students, which is helpful for storing kits and books between sessions

A lot of the equipment is high-tech (such as realistic manikins used in simulations), which makes the learning feel more like real clinical or lab environments rather than just classroom-based learning. The building is very hands-on and practical compared to others on campus and most HLS students spend a lot of time there, so it feels like a main base for the faculty.

Health and Life Sciences courses mainly taught in Hawthorn include:

Nursing and Midwifery

Speech and Language Therapy

Biomedical Science and Medical Science

Forensic Science

Pharmacy

Psychology

Health and Wellbeing

Audiology

Social Work

Public Health and related health courses

It would be interesting to hear what other HLS students think about the Hawthorn Building and the facilities - especially if you’re on a different course to me
