Am I honestly cooked? 2.0 (Universities, GCSEs and Alevels)

I am currently in year 12, but am thinking of what unis I want to apply to in the near future, including Imperial, Bath, Queen Mary, UCL and Cambridge.

All being a dream to get into.

However I have some problems, especially with Cambridge and Imperial, and that is with my GCSE grades and Alevel choices.

For my GCSEs I achieved, 877777643, with the 3 being in French, 4 being in history, 6 being in statistics.

While I was initially proud of these results, I became slightly let down (and honestly scared) when I saw people with 12 GCSEs, mainly grade 9s with a few 8s and an odd 7 complain about how low their grades are, how disappointed they were and how the assumed they wouldn't stand a chance at applying to Oxbridge or any other top universities.

The only reason that I have not completely shut down, is that the school that I went to and had completed my GCSEs in had been ranked as one of the lowest, being on the news for having the lowest attendance in the UK, having around 50% of the students receive free school meals and only 3% of their students achieving grades 7 and above in their GCSES.

On top of only teaching the content for statistics 3 month prior to the actual GCSE taking place and having mandatory combined science. And constant disruptions (including: fights, "suspicious" teachers, gangs, pregnancies among students, you name it).

But ignoring all these factors, I still feel like compared to others my grades are, to be honest, cheeks.

And for my alevel choices, I couldn't decide between applying for medicine or engineering (and yes I know they are both extremely competitive) if I were to go to uni. So I chose biology and chemistry (for med) and physics and maths (for engineering).

And as for medicine, while I personally think my alevel choices are fine, I don't have many (a super duper small amount) of related supercuriculars.

Compared to Engineering, specifically aerospace engineering, I think my level choices are quite poor as I do not take further maths, due to the fact that I achieved a 7, and while other sixth forms did allow me to do further maths, the one I currently go to, did not cause I didn't achieve the minimum, an 8.

And while I am apart of some supercuriculars/programmes related to both, though some lean more towards engineering (2 from Cambridge, 1 from Imperial and 1 from Bath).

I was wondering if there were other programmes, competitions, internships, work experience, literally anything, that allows me to stand out, and/or make up for my alevels. Any advice on what to do, if I should continue trying to get into these unis, ect.

(Sorry for the yap btw 😔, and please be honest)

The top universities for engineering will definitely take your GCSEs into account and you may struggle to get offers from them. However there are plenty of universities that you will be able to apply for that are also good for engineering. Work hard and look at your options. Try to get into Swansea summer school if you can as you’ll get the chance to try all areas of engineering. Just a thought.

No worries. With your GCSEs I think you may think more about working towards great universities like Sheffield, Nottingham, Birmingham or Liverpool. Sheffield and Nottingham will require higher grades for engineering than the other two and are higher ranked. All of these unis have great reputations too. You may want to swap out one of those for a university like Swansea as a very strong insurance choice as the grades required are slightly lower again. Best to visit universities and see what you think. Open days start around June time and go through to November but you need to book. The Swansea summer school is in early July so make sure you take a look to see if applications are open for it. It’s a great opportunity and if you do get in, they give you a contextual offer if you apply. My son didn’t apply in the end as he went for Bristol, Nottingham, Sheffield, Birmingham and Liverpool. He is still waiting for an offer from Bristol but has had offers from the rest. With Bristol they do take GCSEs into account so you need mostly 9’s to stand a chance.

Hey,

As others have mentioned, some other great Russel Group options are Birmingham, Nottingham, Liverpool and, of course, Sheffield. 😄

If you have any questions about what it is like studying at Sheffield, or any specific courses, do let me know and I'd be more than happy to help!

Best of luck to you,

If you are applying for engineering, give it a shot. Universities look at your GCSES contextually, most often based on the school you went to- you are not completely cooked!
