If you’ve suddenly realised your course choice doesn’t feel right anymore, you’re not alone. People change their minds all the time once they properly look at modules, careers, or what the subject is like. The good news: you can switch without blowing up your UCAS application. You just need to do it in the right order.
If you haven’t submitted yet
This is the easiest stage. Swap your choices, quickly check entry requirements, and give your personal statement a light tidy so it still matches what you’re applying for.
If you’ve submitted (but don’t have offers yet)
Don’t panic, you can decide by visiting the Uni and speaking to the academic team to make sure it's the right change before deciding to withdraw. If you want to change course at the same university, email admissions and ask if they can move your application to the new course. If you’re changing to a totally different subject, double-check requirements first; some courses have extra steps (portfolio, interview, DBS checks).
If you’ve already got offers
Start by asking the university if you can switch courses and keep your offer (this often works if the courses are similar and there’s space). If not, they’ll tell you your options. Sometimes it’s a new application, sometimes it’s switching after enrolment.
Quick “don’t wreck it” checklist
-Check entry requirements (and any required subjects).
-Email the university before you decline anything.
-Keep your current offer until you’ve got a clear alternative.
-Watch out for high-demand courses with limited places.
Changing your course choice can feel scary, but it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means you’re paying attention to what suits you. Take a breath, check the requirements, speak to the university, and make one clear move at a time. A small switch now can save you a lot of stress later and get you onto a course you’ll genuinely enjoy.
