exeter or birmingham for firming law?

I have an offer for both exeter and birmingham for law which are my top choices but im not sure which to firm. both have benefits like birmingham have a better nightlife and have a lot more year abroad options, but i loved the exeter campus significantly more and the feel of the university as a whole. there are less year abroad options for exeter too and ive heard mixed opinions about the nightlife in exeter. exeter are offering me lower grades (ABB) if i firm them compared to birmingham (AAB) and wanted to find out more about exeter specifically, about the nightlife and the atmosphere as a whole (and what is the accom like and what are the best ones socially and nicest too?)

Hiya!

Amazing to hear you’re considering Exeter! Exeter is a very strong uni for law - our course ranks in the Top 15 in the UK as well as Top 10 for graduate prospects. Alongside the quality of the teaching, there are useful extracurricular activities like mooting competitions, pro bono opportunities such as judicial shadowing and research assistance, and a variety of work placements. These ensure you gain practical skills and build confidence in real world scenarios - this sort of hands-on experience is invaluable to potential employers. If you’d like some first hand information about personal experience with the course feel free to visit our Unibuddy page and find a law student to chat with: Ask a Current Student

Regarding social life and nightlife, as a current student myself I can definitely vouch for Exeter! You may be interested in joining the Law society which is a great way to meet people on your course and make some fast friends to attend socials with. Outside of academic societies, we have over 300 others covering a wide range of sports, cultures, activities and interests so it’s incredibly easy to find like-minded people. Streatham campus has a great community feel with plenty of green spaces and study spots and is conveniently close to the city. Exeter city is a friendly, bustling place, very walkable, with a variety of cafes and restaurants and of course plenty of fun options for nights out! We do have quite a few popular clubs, some of which tickets are often sold out for so it’s safe to say there is a pretty good nightlife - I’m not a big party person but have really enjoyed the times I have gone out. There’s often some sort of themed club night going on so walking around town in the evenings you’re pretty much guaranteed to see someone in some sort of fancy dress costume - seeing a crowd of minions wandering the streets of Exeter doesn’t even faze me anymore! My personal favourite aspect is the proximity to the sea - it’s only a 20-30 minute train journey from the beach which is such a nice way to destress after summer exams and deadlines. Attending open days and offer holders days is the best way to get a feel for the uni and the city and see if it suits you.

In terms of accommodation, we have plenty of options both on and off campus depending on whether you’d prefer to be closer to the uni or closer to the city. Self-catered accommodations will have communal kitchen/living areas which are great for socialising and getting to know your flatmates, and the dining halls in catered accommodations also provide a good opportunity to chat while you eat as well as shared social spaces - so unless you’re in a studio they’re all pretty social! I was in East Park in my first year which is a self-catered accommodation on campus and I had an en-suite room - I really enjoyed my time there and while my room was small (as most uni rooms are!) I decorated it to become a really cosy comfortable space. I would probably have to say the nicest accommodation is Holland Hall - which does come with the caveat of it being the most expensive - which is a catered option very close to campus with a lovely view and what I’ve heard is really tasty food, but honestly it all depends on preference. Have a look at our room finder page here to sort by your preferences in terms of budget etc. and take some of the virtual 3D room tours for anything that takes your fancy!

Altogether, Exeter uni is a great option for a strong, practical law course that also provides a vibrant social scene - you’ll be sure to really get the most of your uni experience here.
