A level choices for urban planning/design

So I want to specifically do the urban planning, design and management course at UCL. And I’m currently in year 11 struggling on what a levels should I pick. I did look at the course and see what a levels suit it best but I’m torn between which is the better combo.

1. Geography. Sociology. Graphic design

2. Geography. Economics. Graphic design

3. Geography. Economics. Sociology

: now the thing is, I’m not really familiar with economics but I just know I’ll find it pretty boring and stuff, however it’s a well respected a level and I think it’ll up my chance more to get into UCL? Or would it not? That’s what I’m confused about.

I also think I most likely wanna have graphics in the combo so I could open doors to other career paths which I’m thinking about ( like interior design)

Well in conclusion, I’m not sure if picking sociology over economics is going to lower my chance to get into UCL, and if economics is more useful and related to urban planning and whatnot.

But I know I like sociology more; I don’t care about which one I’ll enjoy more I just want to know which one will help me more.

All of those subjects are preferred by UCL so I would pick whatever you will enjoy most, which I see is sociology. See here: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/undergraduate/degrees/urban-planning-design-and-management-bsc
I would also recommend not just picking one university and basing everything you do on that. I would have a look at other urban planning or similar courses to keep your options a little wider.

But isn’t urban planning more to do with economics than sociology? I also am looking into uob however there urban planning course doesn’t have the design element in it which im the most interested in. I also 100% want to go to a Russel group uni or a respectable one and stay in the UK, so I don’t know if there is much choices, thank you.

I’m interested in urban design too. I do Geography History and Politics. Any combination of A levels from the recommended list is fine! Other than that just do what you enjoy because that’s what you’ll do best at

Have a look at the accredited courses on the RTPI website for different urban planning degrees, also have you considered Architecture?

Have you looked on the UCAS website? It will show you all of the urban planning courses offered by UK universities.
I also recommend actually looking at the courses rather than just the name of the university. Russell Group universities are titles given by the universities themselves and doesn't tell you a great deal about the course being offered.

I don't have any detailed knowledge on urban planning so couldn't possibly comment.

I’ve looked into Architecture as well however almost all unis require maths and physics for it, which are literally the exact subjects I’m terrible at.

In Y12, obv depends on the modules your school does. I love the human geography side, lots of parallels with urban planning and cities. IMO If you enjoyed geography at GSCE you’ll like it at a level. It’s not as much as a jump like other subjects and more so an expansion of current content knowledge

Thanks! I definitely will like it at a levels then, one last question I promise. How did you learn about urban planning/design? Did you research a ton online or did your subjects expand on it? I find it difficult to truly understand what an urban planner/ designer does. What have you done extra while studying I know you did lots of work experience but do u have to like re-design a local place or anything like that?

Hahaha dw!!
Well it’s such a niche course that there really isn’t much online regarding it. In fact your probs like the 5th person I’ve ever seen talk about it. When I worked at the council it was mostly from the perspective of a Planning officer / planning applications vibe. Urban Design on the other hand is shared between urbanists and Architects, I know of roles whereby the responsibility is drawing up master plans, place purpose and zoning etc. but it is an interdisciplinary field and can be hard to define!!

If you're not interested in economics, don't take it. It's not "preferable" to sociology. The first combination seems very thematic and appropriate for the course from what I can see
