Help me choose: Falmouth vs Gloucestershire for film? 🎬

I’ve been accepted for BA Film at Falmouth and BA Film & TV Production at Gloucestershire. Has anyone studied at either? What are the facilities, teaching and student life like? Any advice on which is better for film careers or industry links?

Did you go to an open day or have you been invited to offer-holder days?

Hi Chris,

I'm Alexandro and I'm a current Film student at Falmouth, I read your post and thought I'd answer some of the questions you have .

I'll start by answering your course specific questions on facilities, teaching and networking. Firstly our facilities, equipment and teaching are all industry standard and very well maintained! Most of the staff including the technical officers and the film practice teachers still work in industry meaning that not only is all the equipment and facilities always in date and in sync with what the industry is using, but all your teachings are also always updating and staying relevant, which is really important in a field like film which is always shifting and changing. The teaching staff are also super helpful and supportive, they all have 1 on 1 meetings available to book at most times and are always happy to help you with anything you might have, even if it's a project or assignment they're not directly attached to. As for networking, Falmouth has so many opportunities for it. Not only do we have events such as the masterclasses every wednesday where we bring in industry professionals to talk about their work and you can ask questions, but we are also one of the only universities in the world to have a professional production company directly attached to our department which makes feature films every year and brings students onto projects lead by industry professionals (which is incredibly good not just for your portfolio but also for networking).

As for student life, it's quite pleasant! It must be admitted that Falmouth is not a large town, however that's also part of its charm. If you're the kind of person who loves big cities, giant clubs and other similar experiences then I'd consider making sure you think about that aspect when thinking of coming here, but if on the other hand you enjoy a bit of quiet, beautiful scenery, great pubs, smaller clubs and the beach then maybe the town of Falmouth here in Cornwall, with great sights all around, is the right place for you! (It's also worth mentioning that we're close to big towns, if you are worried about being isolated from them completely, that's definitely not the case). We also have many many societies, likely anything you can think of, as well as lots of events all year round run by these societies, the student union or just by students in general! The community here is also incredibly accepting, no matter your background or walk of life, this not only benefits life socially but also for your work practice! The uni encourages collaborative work between departments meaning you'll get lots of opportunities to work with people from all sorts of different arts (I think I've worked with almost every department, only courses like robotics and architecture have escaped me so far and they won't be able to forever), this is not only great for networking and socialization but also for then elevating your work to a whole other level and allowing you to grow in ways you might not have expected (the collaborative aspect of this uni is a big reason why I chose it).

I hope this response was able to help you a bit, if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to reach out by making another response to this comment or otherwise I recommend either reading student made info blogs on the Falmouth website or reaching out to other students directly via the "chat with a student" feature also on the website! Have a great day .
