Pass

Hi everyone,
I completed my Master’s degree with a Pass and I’m considering applying for a PhD. I was just one mark below a Merit. I’m feeling quite worried about applying because I’m afraid of rejection due to my result.

However, I do have a fully funded scholarship from my workplace to support my PhD studies.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and still succeeded? I would truly appreciate any advice or shared experiences.

There's no answer. You have to apply and see what the response is. You must realise that at PhD level it depends on what your research proposal is, how well equipped you are to do the research (language skills, maths skills, access to primary sources, access to equipment etc) and how strongly you have a supervisor.

If you are progressing directly from your masters and an element you did well in, if you are staying in the same institution with strong Supervisor support, it shouldn't be much of an issue.

If you are changing unI, changing focus and starting out finding a new Supervisor - you may find the competition pretty tough, even with funding.

Hey hey! Though I personally have not experienced this, I have learnt that when it comes to PhD admissions, it is not just the Master's that is considered.

Admissions teams care more about:

your research idea/proposal

evidence you can complete long-term research

relevant experience or professional insight

supervisor fit

funding security

Your Master's classification is just one signal and not the sole decision-maker

I would say you have two big positives: You were extremely close to a merit and you already have funding.

What I suggest you focus on now:

A strong research proposal, that is clear and a practical proposal can outweigh a borderline grade

Contact supervisors before applying by emailing potential supervisors and briefly explain your research idea, your funded status and your background

Being confident in yourself and your abilities

Feeling worried about rejection is normal but I feel like being slightly below a Merit is more of a hurdle than a barrier so it is always worth giving it a shot by applying. I wish you all the best 🙂
