Uni decision - maths :p

Hiii

I have applied for Mmath and have narrowed my offers down to lancaster, york, and bath. I think i want to firm bath uni, and put york uni as my insurance.

However, i just wanted to know if anyone goes to either of those universities or does that course and what they think of it really, as im not super sure about the order of my firm and insurance since i loved both cities and both of the uni courses.

Thank youu!! 😝
@University of Bath will be able to advise about Bath.

Hi @cjay0

Wow, it's great to see you have had offers from those universities! 😊

While I personally have not attended them, I'd love to give some guidance on choosing the right university for you. You could begin with comparing the cities, such as the type of accommodation you could get, the activities and the places you could visit. You could also compare the general "vibe" you get from each city , which makes you feel more welcome and safer?

Here are some more general comparison points that I like to recommend:
Grade requirements 📖- Compare the requirements to get into each university. If it is a close decision between the two, I'd recommend choosing the one with slightly lower requirements to relieve some pressure if possible.
Modules 📚- Head onto the university website and compare the modules for your course of interest. This way you can see which course is more closely tailored to your interests.
Distance 🛣️- This depends on how much you value being in close distance to home, therefore varying importance to everyone.
Placement year 🌇- It's an excellent chance to gain work experience and put you one step ahead when you exit university, so it may be worth seeing if either university offer it for your course.
Quality 🎓- What's the reputation of the course? You could look at other students opinions, awards and more.
Cost of living 💵- Which is more affordable? This could take into account travel costs or accommodation costs.

I feel your next steps may be to wait for more replies from current students to receive an inside perspective, while also thinking of certain factors that are important to your.

I hope this helps, please feel free to ask me any questions,
-Sophia (University of Lancashire)

Hello @cjay0!

Congratulations on your offer to study at York 🎉 And for receiving so many other offers from other great universities too! 😀

I studied Biology at York between 2018 and 2022 and I loved my time here, so much so that I now work for the University!

As for my personal experience, I found my course to be really interesting, and the lecturers were particularly supportive if I didn't understand something. I also enjoyed that I could mould my degree to my interest by choosing from a wide range of modules, and get experience of lots of different skills, from lab-based practices to writing essays.

York is also one of a few UK universities that use a college system. So which accommodation you're in in your 1st year will determine which college you're in. But if you're a commuting student you'll still be assigned to a college so you won't miss out on anything. I was in Derwent and loved it! Which college you're part of doesn't affect your degree, but it does mean you get a ready-made community within the University, fun social events to attend, access to college sport and music, plus an extra layer of support.

We have over 65 sports teams, from beginner to competitive levels, plus hundreds of societies, so there will always be something you'll enjoy on offer. I really enjoy singing, so I was part of Zamar Choir during my time at York, performing at the concerts is something I'll always look back fondly on.

If you've got any specific questions about the MMath Mathematics Course, please let us know and we'll do our best to find the answer.

I hope this helps!

Hello!

Congrats on your offers!
If you haven't already decided I would be happy to tell you anything about Lancaster! I don't study that course though I can say the university campus and facilities are great, if you haven't been to visit campus I would recommend coming to an offer holder day!

Hi OP,
Just to add to the previous response, I am currently doing a BSc in Mathematics and Statistics and I can only confirm that Lancaster is a great place to study, especially for Maths! Not only are we ranked 11th for Maths in the UK according to the Complete University Guide (Bath and York are 7th and 24th respectively in this), but we are also currently undergoing a significant overhaul to our curriculum to make sure it is more modernised, with new modules coming in relating to AI and Data Science which keeps students well-informed with current applied mathematics!

One thing I really enjoyed about Lancaster is the choices of optional modules, specifically in my first year - I was able to do a minor in Philosophy, a subject that I studied tangentially doing A-Level RS and really wanted to continue further. This is now optional (you can choose another maths module instead of this), but you can "minor" in subjects like languages, computer science, philosophy, accounting and economics, provided you meet the A-Level (or equivalent) requirements. I think this option definitely gave me a more enriching experience in my first year, and I gained loads of skills that I wouldn't have been able to do with just a straight maths degree (such as essay-writing and more critical thinking based skills). One of my friends did her minor in french, which she really enjoyed, and may even be an employability boost in the future too!

Another thing I really enjoy about about Lancaster maths is the amount of support that I receive here. From chatting to the lecturer after a lecture, to attending their office hours, to being able to ask questions during workshops, Lancaster's maths support system is truly unparalleled in my opinion. We also have LUMA, a student-ran maths association that is another support network, and MASH, the Maths and Stats Hub which provides 1-1 support, and additional workshops. Our academic advisors are also based in the mathematics department, which is another form of academic (as well as wellbeing) support.

One important thing to consider is location. Lancaster, York and Bath are all campus universities, but they are located across the UK. If you are looking for a more "lively" student experience it may be best to look into transport links to bigger cities such as Manchester and Liverpool, whereas if you are a fan of more nature-based pastimes then both Lancaster and York are great places to be in terms of how close they are to the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales respectively!

Overall, it is an incredibly tough decision to make, and I would highly recommend (as Zak said) coming to an Offer Holder Day at all 3 places so that you can visit in person and truly get a vibe for the places you are considering living for the next 4 years of your life!!

Hope this helps

Hi,

It sounds like you’ve already done the right thing by visiting both places, because liking the city is honestly a huge factor for the next 4 years.
In terms of the course itself, the MMath at the University of Bath is quite rigorous and maths-focused. The course starts with a broad foundation in pure and applied maths, programming and statistics, and later you can specialise in areas you enjoy more. It’s also quite flexible after first year with module choices.
The University of York maths courses are also very well regarded and a lot of people like the campus environment there, so academically you’re not really making a “bad” choice between them. Both universities have strong maths departments and graduates from both go into similar careers like finance, tech, data science or research.
A couple things that might help you decide firm vs insurance:

Offer conditions your insurance should normally be a bit lower than your firm so it’s actually realistic if you miss your firm.

Where you’d genuinely be happy if you ended up going there.

Course structure check optional modules, placements, or study abroad options because that can differ quite a bit.

From what you’ve said, Bath sounds like a good firm choice if it’s the one you’re leaning towards, and York often works well as an insurance depending on the grade requirements.
Honestly though, if you loved both cities you’re already in a good position because either one could work out really well. A lot of your experience will come down to what you do outside lectures as well (societies, internships, projects etc).
